-It reaches second place in the field of internationalization and, in physical sciences, the UG ranks in the top 10.

Guanajuato, Gto., September 2, 2019.- According to the renowned international evaluator Times Higher Education (THE) in its 2019 ranking, the University of Guanajuato (UG) ranks fourth among the country's State Public Universities and 76th among the Universities of Latin America. It highlights its position in the field of internationalization in which it ranks second among public Universities.

THE is a provider of higher education data. Their work is based on World University Rankings scores. The ranking provides performance information in different central areas of university activity and allows comparative evaluation with other institutions, whether competitors or collaborators, in regions, topics and other key criteria.

Ranking by Area of Knowledge

In the ranking of universities in the area of physical sciences of the same evaluator, the University of Guanajuato is ranked among the top 10 universities globally and among the top 10 nationally. Specifically, the Institution is in the block from position 801 to 963.

The total UG score in this area of knowledge ranking ranged from 8.2 to 17.2. Internationalization was the highest-scoring criterion (47.1), behind UNAM alone (among Mexican universities in the ranking). The second-best performing criterion was the relationship with companies/industry (30.4), followed by teaching (18.9). Finally, the two missing criteria are citation and research, with 14.3 and 9.9 points respectively.

This ranking in physical sciences is delimited in a set of subjects specific to institutions: mathematics and statistics, physics and astronomy, chemistry, geology, environmental environmental sciences, earth and maritime sciences.

Like the Global Ranking, the university ranking for the area of physical sciences, employs 13 indicators grouped into five categories with a specific score. These categories are weighted as follows:

Teaching: learning environment (27.5%)
Research: volume, generation and reputation (27.5%)
Citations: research influence (35%)
International outlook: staff, students and research (7.5%)
Industry income: innovation (2.5%)

In addition, there are additional criteria for a university to be within the above-mentioned ranking: it must have at least 500 publications in physical science disciplines in the last 5 years, the Institution having at least 5 percent of its staff academic in disciplines of physical sciences or have at least 50 individuals of the academic staff in the aforementioned disciplines.

Only 11 universities in Mexico are ranked in this ranking, including the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the University of Guadalajara, the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP), the Instituto Tecnológico de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey, etc.
