Guanajuato, Gto., September 6, 2019.- The General University Council agreed to award "Doctor Honoris Causa" to Luigi Ferrajoli and Sergio García Ramírez, prominent theorists of law, whose work in favor of the protection of human rights has transcended internationally.

Both proposals were submitted by the Commission of Honor and Justice to the highest governing body of the University of Guanajuato (UG).

Dr. Luigi Ferrajoli is a philosopher of law and one of the leading theorists of legal guarantee, a normative model of law that at the political level seeks to "minimize violence" and "maximize freedom".

He has been a professor at the University of Camerino and the University of Rome; he is the author of books that have become indispensable readings for law scholars. It highlights "Constitutionalism through the State", "Right and Reason, Theory of Criminal Garantism", and the three takes of "Principia iuris".

His main contributions are in the field of democratic constitutionalism and the doctrine on fundamental rights in legal culture.

Dr. Sergio García Ramírez is considered the most important jurist in the country. Author of more than 50 books in the field of criminal procedural law, constitutional, agricultural, prison; public international law and human rights.

His outstanding academic career earned him the distinction as a researcher emeritus of the National System of Researchers (SNI), professor emeritus of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, as well as numerous recognitions at national and international level.

He was President of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, and in the public service he highlights his work as Attorney General of the Republic, Electoral Counselor of the Federal Electoral Institute and President of the High Court of Agriculture.

He also participated in the creation of public institutions in Mexico such as the Child Guardianship Council and the National Institute of Criminal Sciences (INACIPE).

These distinctions will be delivered by the plenary of the General University Council in public and solemn session.
