-Of the 9 winners of the Guanajuato Delegation, 3 medals went to UG students

Guanajuato, Gto., September 10, 2019.- Students of the High School College (CNMS) of the University of Guanajuato had an outstanding participation during the regional phase of the Mexican Olympiad of Mathematics (WMO); where the state delegation obtained 9 medals.

The Delegate of the Mexican Mathematical Olympiad in Guanajuato, Myriam Hernández Ketchul, explained that the West Regional Olympiad involved young people of basic and high level from the states of Aguascalientes, Colima, Guanajuato, Jalisco, Sinaloa and Zacatecas.

In Guanajuato, the Olympiad is organized by the Research Center in Mathematics A.C. (CIMAT) in conjunction with the Department of Mathematics of the University of Guanajuato, with support from the Department of Education of Guanajuato, in which they actively participate Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Computer Science at this House of Studies.

On the part of the University of Guanajuato, Nathalia del Carmen Jasso Vera, from the HS León Centro Histórico won the silver medal; while Itzel Berenice Martínez Palacios and Joshua González Torres of the HS Guanajuato, obtained bronze medals.

In an interview, Itzel Berenice Martínez explained that participating in these contests involves training in the evenings, in addition to fulfilling the rest of academic responsibilities. In addition, Saturdays and Sundays come to CIMAT to continue their preparation, for which they even stay at CIMATEL, the guest house of the Center for Research in Mathematics (CIMAT).

Both she and Joshua González agreed to these events as a pleasant experience, because the mathematics they learn there are different from those they know in school, because for the contest they need to be creative in problem solving; in addition to their knowledge of other students with related interests.

For her part, the Delegate Myriam Hernández Ketchul, who is also a student of the Bachelor of Mathematics at the University of Guanajuato, explained that this contest seeks to promote a taste for this discipline and problem solving, so it incentivizes the logical thinking. But she also stressed that it contributed to fostering bonds among students.

She also detailed that the West Regional Olympics awarded 4 gold medals, 8 silver and 13 bronze. Of these, the Delegation of Guanajuato obtained two gold, two silver and 5 bronze.

The gold medals went to José de Jesús Liceaga Martínez and Jesús Omar Sistos Barrón; the silver ones for Nathalia del Carmen Jasso Vera and Isaac Pancardo Botello and the bronze ones for Juan Braulio Olivares Rodríguez, Itzel Berenice Martínez Palacios, Héctor Fernando Ricárdez Lara, Antonio Barragán Romero and Joshua González Torres.

On the dynamics of selecting those who will participate in the National Mathematics Olympiad, which will take place in November, he explained that each state has its own system for electing the students who will make up their delegation.

In the case of Guanajuato, there are 10 shortlisted for the national contest, in which a delegation of six students will participate, who will attend the contest that will be held from November 10 to 15 in Mexico City.
