Tierra Blanca, Gto., October 30, 2019.- Three students of the Engineering in Agronomy of the University of Guanajuato, concerned with the care of the environment and the preservation of natural resources created the brand "Popotes Ñañú", utensils made of reed.

Reed is a wild plant that spreads easily naturally. It usually grows in swampy areas, lakes and rivers. Reed has multiple uses ranging from ornamental, construction and ceremonial.

The straws made from this material are intended to take care of the environment and reduce the consumption of disposable plastics.

In an interview, the students explained that the straw is made from reed, an endemic product to the region, which can be obtained throughout the year. "We know the damage that plastics cause and that's why we think about this project," Everardo said.

The students of Engineering in Agronomy commented that they chose to make this product because the straws are widely used in society. "In addition, our project has a traditional approach because the reed is carved with the hands of the Otomí indigenous congregation," Ana Gabriela said.

He also emphasized that the municipality of Tierra Blanca has a cultural wealth thanks to indigenous peoples. "With "Popotes Ñañu" we want to take care of the environment but also to give jobs to the workers of the region, who have been working the reed for years and are known for making basketry," said David.

It should be noted that the students presented this project under 6th Contest "Ideas in action" organized by the Irapuato-Salamanca Campus of the University of Guanajuato.
