Celaya, Gto., November 15, 2019.- As a participant in one of the disciplines that require great will and strength of character, Alejandro Arroyo López, an undergraduate student of the degree in Financial Management traveled to Seoul, South Korea, to represent our country in the World Sambo Championships 2019.

In an interview, he shared details of his journey and the experience he had in the distant Asian country, where he had to face competitors from different regions of the world in the Sambo combat category of 62 kilograms, which consists of making the most takedowns, grapples, fight on the floor, box and and kick to get enough points and crown yourself champion.

Guanajuato holds the national team championship in this sports discipline, a position that reached 15 medals at the 2018 Sambo National Championship, showing the high quality that young competitors have in this contact sport. This selective belongs to Alejandro Arroyo, a 20 years-old athlete, who came from Tarimoro and student at the Celaya-Salvatierra Campus of the University of Guanajuato.

Sambo is a discipline created in Russia very similar to mixed martial arts. It is one of four forms of competition-level fighting, along with wrestling, Greco-Roman and judo. Alejandro Arroyo measured against Canadian Liam MacFadyen, a rival he had already faced at the Pan American Championships held in the Dominican Republic, who eliminated the Guanajuatense in the eighth round. Despite not winning against his opponent, Alejandro is the first athlete from the state of Guanajuato to participate worldwide in the sport.

Cinco Guanajuatenses are part of the Mexican Sambo and Combat Sambo National Team: Eustolia Lara Paredes, Nancy Hernández, Diego Hernández Villeda, Yael Aguilera Bolaños and UG student Alejandro Arroyo López, which makes the State a hotbed for the training of sambo athletes.

Kazakhstan will be the host of the next world championship, where Alejandro Arroyo will undoubtedly return to represent the state, Mexico and his alma Mater the University of Guanajuato.
