abre-sus-puertas-el-museo-de-la-universidad-de-guanajuato-ug-ugtoGuanajuato, Gto., November 21, 2019.- With a sample of the assets of the pictorial, ethnographic and scientific heritage accumulated during 287 years of history, the Museum of the University of Guanajuato (MUG) opened its doors.

During the inaugural event, the President of the University of Guanajuato, Dr. Luis Felipe Guerrero Agripino, said that the opening of the MUG represents a starting point for a comprehensive cultural project, which derives from an institutional position: the democratization of art and culture.

He emphasized that the MUG is not from the University, but a project that emerges from the House of Studies and aspires to reach all those who appropriate their cultural sense.

He recalled that the project began in 2015, after the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) ceded the property to the UG in commode, for a period of 99 years, with the possibility of renewal.

He also acknowledged the technical and financial difficulties that occurred during the development of the project, and thanked all the university bodies that participated, as well as the support of the state government and other actors to achieve opening of the Museum.

The Governor of the State, Lic. Diego Sinhue Rodríguez Vallejo, congratulated the university community on the opening of this new cultural space, and reiterated its management's commitment to the House of Studies projects, while stating that "you cannot comprehend the greatness of this city without the University of Guanajuato."

For his part, the Director of Cultural Extension of the UG, Mtro. José Osvaldo Chávez Rodríguez, spoke of the origins of the project as well as the history of the property that belonged to the Ajuria-Ezcurdia family and that from 1985 housed the IMSS, until it was ceded in commode to the UG to be used as a dissemination tool for the science and culture.

The Director of Infrastructure and University Services, Mtro. Eloy Juárez Sandoval who gave the technical explanation of the restoration and adequacy of the property.

The MUG will feature nine permanent exhibitions, with themes: our forerunners, our pictorial collection, the century of lights, the century of revolutions, nostalgia for the past, mining, the scientific cabinets of the College, the setting of Study of the period of the nineteenth century and a room that will have transcendental elements that account for the past of our Institution and others that narrate the evolution of the universe.

In addition, he will temporarily exhibit the exhibitions "Knowing James Pinto", "The Basins of the Lerma River" and "The Little Cosmos of Insects".

The new venue, located at Calle Cantarranas/Hidalgo No. 13 (in front of the Teatro Principal), will have at the disposal of its visitors a reading room with a collection of books mainly related to art, science, history, cultural heritage.
