Irapuato, Gto. October 5, 2015.- With support from the State Council for Mental Health, a professor at Nursing in the University of Guanajuato (UG) performs a study to prevent anxiety and depression in college students in the city of Irapuato.

Dr. Gerardo Ruvalcaba Palacios' project, professor from the nursing department in Nursing and Midwifery from Campus Irapuato-Salamanca from UG, was selected in the summon of additional support for research in health, issued by the government of the state of Guanajuato, through the State Council for Mental Health.

In such summon, higher education institutions from the state of Guanajuato, from the Health Sector and other institutions participate to present research work in development that address the main problems in mental health in the state: addictions, depression and anxiety, suicide, familiar, sexual and gender violence, as well as bullying and child abuse.

Selected projects will receive additional economic resources allowing researchers to finish their research projects.

The project "Uso de retroalimentación biológica para el tratamiento de la ansiedad y depresión en estudiantes universitaraios" (Use of biological feedback to treat anxiety and depression in college students) has the purpose to evaluate the effects of a  related training program based in the use of biological feedback equipment (RAB for its acronym in Spanish) to modulate the autonomous activity associated with the presence of anxiety and depression in college students from the city of Irapuato.

Dr. Ruvalcaba explained that it is expected that the results from the study contribute to establish efficient and low-cost intervention strategies mainly from the preventive point of view for these disorders.

An important feature from this study is that involves the participation of students in nursing in training development which allows professionals in this service to be more actively involved in detecting and treating the anxiety and depression in college youth, so that through early detection and timely treatment, contribute to contain the progress of the illness until disability degrees.

Besides, for their promoter role in health, these health professionals could be who develop and apply preventive strategies that will contribute to diminish the incidence and prevalence of such disorders.
