STATE OF GTO

The state of Guanajuato is located in Central Mexico. It covers an area of 30,608 kms. with 46 municipalities. Its prehispanic history starts before the colonization by the spaniards as shown in four archeological sites:

*Plazuelas in the city of Pénjamo
*Cañada de la Virgen in the city of San Miguel Allende
*Peralta in the city of Abasolo
*El Cóporo in the city of Ocampo

GUANAJUATO CITY

The state capital is the city of Guanajuato; it was founded around 1520, due to the discovery of the first silver deposits which led to the growth and consolidation as a city. Its maximum splendor dates back to the XVIII century and the richness of its mines that made it the world's leading center of silver mining. This city is currently considered a jewel of baroque art. Moreover, in this city was held the first battle for independence of Mexico.  www.inah.gob.mx

CULTURAL ENVIRONMENT

In 1988, Guanajuato and its adjacent mines were declared World Heritage site by UNESCO. The architecture and the decorative elements of baroque and neoclassical buildings of the city, such as the “Templo de la Compañia” a former Jesuit church,  and the Valenciana church,  are considered among the most beautiful examples of the Baroque architecture in Mexico.  The Juarez Theater and other buildings have a strong French influence.
