Guanajuato, Gto., September 6, 2016.- With the finality to improve the quality of life of the inhabitants of marginal communities, but also involve college students in social projects; reason why the Social Service group to Low Income Communities (Sescobre for its acronym in Spanish) seeks to concrete before the present year ends, the first ecological greenhouse in the community "El Tablón."
That is what Lic. Laura Estela Vázquez Rodríguez informed, who is responsible of High Social Impact Projects of the Coordination of Extension and Academic Cooperation of Campus Guanajuato and head of the Sescobre group, who requested help from the university community to donate plastic bottles (PET).
She remembered that just last August 27th, Sescobre members visited "El Tablón" to follow up the project of the ecological greenhouse, to make the first harvest of the family orchard that began three months ago with the inhabitants of such community.
She emphasized that result was satisfactory, just three months ago they took seeds and encouraged people to plant lettuce, green beans, chard, pumpkin, radish, cucumber and carrot among other vegetables and this first harvest was very good; for example, one of the orchards, the one of Mrs. Juana Ledezma Quintero, grew everything, even corn that she plants every year.
The project was such a success, that now they don't buy products, but consumes what she grows and share among neighbors: onions, tomatoes, strawberries, and when they want to eat meat, they a chicken breeder.
That was the objective, said the head of Sescobre, support the economy and the quality of life of the people and involve UG students, in this case there is a student from 5th semester of architecture, who makes the greenhouse project according the colors that the family who will lend the patch like, measurements and geography of the place, so these families can continue growing even in freezing conditions. The idea is to build four or five more greenhouses.
To do so, we'll seek to involve more students from Architecture and Engineering, since they'll need a brigade of at least 20 volunteers, although students from Arts, Languages and History already participate in this project, whose activities are considered as social service.
"PET" NEEDED
To concrete this project, Lic. Vázquez Rodríguez summoned the university community to donate PET bottles without flattening them, because they will be the "walls" of the greenhouse. The goal, she said, is to gather 1,500 600ml soda bottles, which are thicker, 1 ½ lt., and even bottled water, but hard plastic. The donations are received in the Extension Coordination of Campus Guanajuato.
