Currently, two members from UG are part of a select group of members of the Academy: Dr. Benjamín Valdivia and M.A. Eugenio Trueba

Guanajuato, Gto., September 10, 2016. With the purpose to preserve and restitute the purity of Spanish, write dictionaries and grammar of the spoken languages in national territory and auxiliary in the use and style, was created the Mexican Academy of the Language, that on September 11 1875, had its opening session.

It is about an entity of great solemnity and tradition, but far from being conservative and stiff, it is a vanguard institution, which proposes the user the correction, and until it is possible, the lack of ambiguity in the language, explains Dr. Benjamin Valdivia, professor at the University of Guanajuato and one of the 72 members of the Mexican Academy.

According the motto, the Academy "cleans and shines" the language, more than dictating norms, sets the uses the Mexican make of Spanish, to incorporate them as a valid language. So, when setting vocabularies, these constitute as a referent for whom is interested in the correct use of the language, adds the poet and advisor of the General Rectory in the House of Studies.

In a country with more than 119 million inhabitants, the Mexican Academy of the Language only admits 72 members, 36 of number, appointment that corresponds to who lives in Mexico City, and 36 correspond, to who lives inside the Republic.

It is about a lifetime appointment, which represents a high honor for who receives it, but also implies an enormous responsibility, recognizes Dr. Valdivia, who was admitted –in 2000—became in the youngest member of the academy. "Sponsored"—meaning, proposed—by the philosopher Mauricio Beuchot and the cervantinian Eulalio Ferrer.

To be a part of this institution, it is necessary to have a sound and recognized professional career, where an impeccable use of the language stands out, be proposed by at least two members of the Academy, and the rest of the members approve their designation.

On the matter, the college professor remembers that there was only one time that the Academy extended an invitation, it was for the poet of Guanajuato Rafael López, who rejected the proposal, and since then, this modality was canceled.

Dr. Benjamín Valdivia clears that it is not about an association of writers, since in the Mexican Academy of the Language there are scientists, medics, philologists or scientists. It means, they attract the use of language in several areas.

So, among their members currently stand out the philosopher and historian Miguel León-Portilla, the scientist Ruy Pérez Tamayo, the philosopher Ramón Xirau, the astronomer Julieta Fierro and the philologist and the philologist and hispanist Margit Frenk.

Along their 141 years of history, great figures have occupied a seat in the Academy sessions, which has had among its members Justo Sierra, Amado Nervo, Carlos Pellicer, Alfonso Reyes, José Vasconcelos, Salvador Novo, Juan Rulfo, and Octavio Paz.

Together with these names, are found those of the three professors of the University of Guanajuato, M.A. Eugenio Trueba Olivares, member of the Mexican Academy of the Language since 1970, of the writer and chronic from Celaya Herminio Martínez –who passed away in 2014—and Dr. Benajmín Valdivia, corresponding member for 16 years and who actively participates in the projects of the institution.

For Dr. Valdivia Magdaleno, member of the National System o Researchers Level II and ascribed to the Division of Architecture, Art & Design at UG, the Academy of the Language has to go behind its users to set the vocabulary that are correct, because the languages are dynamic, collective and are associated to any influences.

He questions: what do we prefer, an incorrect but distinctive language, or a correct language, but ambiguous? The Academy has to see those details, and if we achieve both, we understand better, because –making use of a popular expression--, "by talking we understand," he finalized.
