León, Guanajuato a October 7, 2016.- With the purpose to show the most recent progress in matter of nutrigenomics and its association with the DNA study, the students and professors of the Department of Medicine and Nutrition, as well as the postgraduate programs of Medical Science of Campus Leon of the University of Guanajuato (UG) attended to the conference titles "Genetic variations of importance in nutrigenomics."
Dr. Maria Elizabeth Tejero, graduate from the Universidad Iberoamericana of Mexico City and currently works in the National Institute of Genome Medicine (INMEGEN), gave the conference.
In addition of being a specialist in genetics and nutrition, Dr. Elizabeth Tejero explained to the audience how different phenotypes in human DNA around the world are a factor that may predispose to contract certain diseases such as obesity and other pathologies.
She broadened the topic referring to the Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) are related in a way that miscegenation has formed genetic features that are easily differentiated according the multiple races that inhabit the planet.
For this reason, it is important to study and classify them to develop models that can help prevent diseases that are more latent in certain human groups.
In an interview, she commented: "The purpose we have is to understand how the existing genetic variation between human beings can relate to the presence of some diseases of risk factors from the same and module the form in which we use food. This is why we do these studies."
Afterwards, she showed the cases of studies done in the country on the matter. Works that have delivered relevant results, for example, the fact the Mexico is the first country in the world with the highest relevance of the mutation of the gene "MTHFR C677T," or confirm through thousands of samples that the lack of physical activity from an early age results in a greater risk to suffer diseases associated with overweight such as diabetes.
This space is organized by the professor-researcher at the Department of Medical Science, Dr. Elva Leticia Pérez Luque, is considered by the same academic of great importance for the students at the University, since it provides applications and real studies that reinforce what is learned in the classroom and complement their comprehensive formation by offering them new tools and methodologies to offer a better attention and treatment.
