Guanajuato, Gto., October 22, 2016.- As part of the commitment with society, students from the University of Guanajuato (UG) face the task to offer moral and psychological support to terminal patients in the Regional Hospital of High Specialty of the Bajío located in León, Guanajuato.

Palliative Care is the area responsible of a multidisciplinary team that has chemists, nutritionists, medics, nurses and psychologists, that deal with emotional, social, practical, economic and spiritual problems that the illness plants in people who have prognosis of no more than six months, as well to their families and caregivers.

Leticia Alejandra Granados Vázquez and Francisco Javier Cervantes Torres are two students from the tenth semester of the degree in Psychology, that make this job as part of their University Social Service.

It's a defying job due to the emotional impact they're subject, but it is also gratifying to give support in a barely known area and where not too many people want to consider.

The young students offer individual or group support, to face the conditions of the patients, many of them with colon, rectum and breast cancer, with uncommon diseases or no resistance due to the age.

The University has prepared them, they assure, in theoretical terms, with specialized psychological attention, but has also put them in the center of the problem, seeking to sensitize them so they acquire experience and can make large number of services to the community.

"We see it as a suitcase: we help the patient prepare the last luggage, to have everything in order so the journey will be quieter," commented Leticia with a smile.

It is a challenge as psychologists, commented Francisco Javier, who assures that the team led by Dr. Olga Borrego makes his better work to see every case from different perspectives, with the end to provide the patient a worthy life in their last, but not less important moments.

Both students assure that they have learned that their profession is vital and fundamental in society, since the work bases in communication, which is transcendent as in any kind of personal treatment, broadening the array of possibilities to their area and the treatment methods.

The future psychologists commented that, even when there's a normativity to extend the palliative areas, as well as volunteer groups that help in great measure, a greater effort and more people who are interested is still necessary, hence, he invited all people capable of taking this challenge to make their life more meaningful for themselves and the others.

The University of Guanajuato has tried to awaken in the student the eagerness to serve society, through a process of a university self-awareness, to fulfill their responsibilities. Since 1961, during the fourth period as Rector of Lic. Armando Olivares Carrillo, the university social service was formally instituted, based on the comprehensive formation of men, the recognition of the transcendental values, human solidarity, rescue and transformation of an unfair and upside down world, as well as the worthiness of the human species, placing the University as one of the first educational institutions of Latin America with social sense.
