Guanajuato, Gto., November 1, 2016.- More than one thousand students from the four campuses of the University of Guanajuato (UG) and High School seek to take home the first-place medals in the thirteen sport categories that start today with the 8th University Olympics.
The students from the Campus Celaya-Salvatierra, Guanajuato, Irapuato-Salamanca and Leon, as well as from High School will participate in Athletics, Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Soccer, Volleyball, Chess and Baseball, among others.
In his opening message, the General Rector of the University of Guanajuato, Dr. Luis Felipe Guerrero Agripino, assured that the event has a great transcendence since it manifests friendship, fair play and example in sports, such as daily practice, which can fight social problems.
He added that this contest also helps to detect the talents that will represent the University in national and international competencies. Hence, he committed to form a program to strength the high-performance sports and contribute to the professional development of the students.
Next to this welcome, the Director of Student Development, M.A. José Osvaldo Chávez Rodríguez, applauded the presence of sport talents such as the student Natziel Melissa Sánchez Cruz, bronze medalist in Judo, in the last National Universiada 2016; Monicamiguel Muñoz Olmedo, Pan-American medalist in Sambo and participant in the world competition in Belgium in the next days; as well as Carlos Cordero Gómez, outstanding athlete from Guanajuato representing Mexico in Beijing Olympic Games, in marathon.
Likewise, it was held the trophy ceremony for the winners of the 7th University Olympics 2015, where the High School College obtained the first place with 72 medals (22 gold, 25 silver and 25 bronze), Campus Guanajuato, the second place with 49 medals (15 gold, 21 silver and 13 bronze); and Campus Irapuato-Salamanca with 23 medals (12 gold, 7 silver and 4 bronze).
The attendants witnessed two demonstrations of sport talents from the University. On one hand, the university team, Carlos Cordero, gave a sample of dexterity where he performs in the Dojo. Second, the students Estefania Garcia Montelongo and Joselyn Guadalupe Gómez, from High School, presented to forms of combat in Tae Kwon Do by pairs. It is worth to mention that both students are outstanding exponents in national and international events.
Finally, on behalf of the students, the "Abejas" basketball team's captain, Ulises Tapia, made the sporting oath, where they committed to compete with all their strength to achieve victory.
At the ceremony was also present UG's Pro Vost, Dr. Héctor Efraín Rodríguez de la Rosa; Rector of Campus Irapuato-Salamanca, Dr. Armando Gallegos Muñoz; the Academic Secretary, Dr. Luxana Reynaga Ornelas, representing the Rector of Campus Leon, Dr. Carlos Hidalgo Valadez; and the responsible of the Rectory's Office of Campus Celaya-Salvatierra, Dr. Silvia del Carmen Delgado Sandoval.
Also, attended the event, the Coordinator of Encouragement to the Comprehensive Development of the Student, Ing. Luis Eduardo Calderón Rivas, representing the Rector of Campus Guanajuato, Dr. Teresita de Jesús Rendón Huerta Barrera; the Director of High School College, M.A. Martha Oliva Gallardo Ortega; and the Director of the Municipal Commission of Sport and Attention to youth, Lic. José Francisco Torres Ramírez.
