Guanajuato, Gto., November 8, 2016.- The books that composed the "Hospicio de la Compañía de JHS de Guanaxuato" (1732-1744), background of the University of Guanajuato (UG), realize the war started by the Jesuits with the purpose to censor the "heretical books" and prevent them to be known in what we know as the Mexican territory and specifically in the state of Guanajuato.
That is what the librarian and historian assured, Dr. Andrés Escobar Gutiérrez, during his conference "El caso del texto de Alfonso de Castro", where he reflected toward the origin and the reception of the work "Against all heretics" from the theologian, jurist, royal councilor and Franciscan priest, Alfonso de Castro.
The historian commented that the work "Adversus omnes haereses" of "Against all heretics" (published in Paris in 1534) is part of the 31 titles that belong to the first stage of the Jesuits in Guanajuato (1732-1744), work where the author numbers and refutes how many heresies emerged in the church since the time of the apostles.
He explained that the incorporation of this work in the Library of the Hospice is fundamental, since it is a consequence of a fight against the Lutheran thinking, as well as all kind of works that question the Christian Orthodox thinking, proving the ideological fight that was lived in America, but specially, in the thought and history of the people of Mexico and Guanajuato.
Dr. Andrés Escobar commented that this text had a great impact in this territory, where the Holy Office had complete control on the ways of life of the citizens, hence this is a treasure that is part of the Library Armando Olivares of the University of Guanajuato, same that assured that must be researched deeper since it will throw a greater understanding on the local thinking.
This talk is part of the Exposition of Ancient Books and Conference of the Library of the hospice and College of the Holy Trinity in Guanajuato, which the University and city of Guanajuato celebrate with reason of the 400 years of the Ignatian Patronage and Jesuit influence in the city.
The exposition has a sample of 21 of the 91 titles that the Library Armando Olivares Carrillo keeps and refers to topics of Theology, Moral, Philosophy, Civil Right and Canonical. To the exhibit sums five documents belonging to the time of the Jesuit shine in Guanajuato, as well as 3 paintings of the gallery that portray Saint Ignacio de Loyola, José Joaquín de Sardeneta and Legaspi and Rafael Coromina, professors and rectos of the College of the Holy Trinity of Guanajuato.
