reafirman-calidad-academica-especialidades-medicas-ug-ugtoLeón, Gto., December 23, 2016.- With the objective to certify the academic quality of the medical specialties of the University of Guanajuato (UG), the entry to the Census of Quality Postgraduates (PNPC) of the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACyT) of the specialties of Neonatology, Urology and Geriatrics.

In an interview, Dr. Bertha Isabel Arévalo Rivas, Coordinator of Medical Specialties at UG, commented that the certification process consisted first in a self-diagnosis, then they presented the requirements in reference framework composed by four categories with 18 criteria each, then, each program was registered; CONACyT admitted to be subject for a plenary evaluation composed by evaluating peers.

Dr. Jorge Luis Torres Gutiérrez, head professor of the specialty in Geriatrics referred that this centers his attention in the evaluation of the functional state of the elder in the psychological, biological, family, and social spheres, so they can diagnose any geriatric syndrome.

This specialty is two years long, with the pre-requirement of three years of internal medicine. He added that the Regional Hospital of the Institute of Social Security and Services of the State Workers (ISSSTE), venue of this specialty, among its right holders has 19.4% of the elders, reason why everyday they commit with an efficient medical attention for this social group.

He also pointed out that for 2017, the interns could rotate in one Unit of Palliative Care in Guadalajara and a Geriatric Hospital in Costa Rica. Its level in the quality postgraduate census is in development and is the first specialty of ISSSTE to be approved by CONACyT.

Regarding the Urology specialty, Dr. Carlos Ríos Melgarejo, head professor, explained that they focus in the urinary life of the patient, both from the male and female. There is a wide field of work since it covers Oncology, Pediatrics, Microscopic surgery, Minimum invasion surgery and Cancer surgery.

He asserted that this educational program works hard so the interns have a high human and scientific quality.

This specialty enters the level 1 of new creation of the PNPC, which began in 2014, lasts five years, is the first specialty of Urology in the state of Guanajuato. He indicated that leading this specialty has been gratifying and represents a 24-hour commitment.

On her part, Dr. Guadalupe Vázquez Mendoza, head professor of the specialty of Neonatology, referred that this is the comprehensive attention of the new born; from term to mature, from healthy to sick or very sick. She informed that 20 professors compose it and it has a 16-year experience.

Currently, IMSS' Gynecology-Pediatric Hospital 48 of Leon, venue of this specialty, is in the first places; in addition, it has two students with national certification as best interns. Its status in the PNPC is in development.

In complement to Dr. Vázquez, the ascribed professor, Dr. Rosa Elena Andrade Baeza commented that being a graduate of the first class, fills her with pride that the Neonatology specialty has been the first at IMSS to be acknowledged by CONACyT.

Finally, the three head professors commented that Urology has nine interns enrolled; eight men and one woman, in Neonatology, has eight inters, seven women and one man, and in Geriatrics, has five interns, three men and two women.

The educational offer of the specialties at the University of Guanajuato is composed by 21 educational programs, which were offered since 1970, being the specialty in Anesthesiology the pioneer.
