León, Gto., January 13, 2017.- The professor of the University of Guanajuato (UG), Dr. Marco Laurati, works in a project to increase the durability and resistance, as well as to diminish the costs of materials and items used in the automotive industry.

Dr. Laurati, ascribed to the Department of Physical Engineering of the Division of Science and Engineering of Campus León has been developing the project for two years and focuses his research on soft materials, which are deformable by different techniques where we find polymers, plastics and paints.

The researcher detailed that they seek to develop a polymer system to generate more durable and resistant automotive items, in addition of optimizing the costs and generate materials to be used with new generation fuels, since today the fuel tank absorbs certain substances of the fuel, which reduces its life span, hence, they seek to modify the components to double its durability.

He commented that the new generation polymers are being used –mainly in Europe—and foresees that in no longer than ten years it will go worldwide, likewise, he mentioned the importance the automotive industry has in the Bajío, reason why they'll seek to link the project with a local company and offer alternatives with materials that are developed in the soft matter laboratory at UG.

"What we seek is the easiest way to make the process with the materials, in such form that it would more durable and feasible", he explained.

Another project is the one where they work with components used to make tires, with the intention to diminish the wear of the tire by modifying the particles and its distribution, to also make more efficient the consumption pf fuel in the car. "The challenge is mix compatible substances and see how it influences in the final product", he pointed out.

Lastly, he expressed that in other processes such as tannery, they are making a research to have resistant upholstery products used in the automotive industry, hence, the field of research is wide.
