
Guanajuato, Gto., January 27, 2017. The delegation of the state of Guanajuato, represented by six students, --five of them from HS Guanajuato of the University of Guanajuato (UG)--, had an outstanding participation at the XXVI National Olympics of Biology, where they obtained gold and silver medals.
Juan Pablo Rivera Gómez, of HS León, obtained a gold medal, and Christian Gerardo Jasso Salinas of HS Centro Histórico León, obtained a silver medal. For them, it was a personal and academic achievement, since the time invested in the training as well as the consults and the support of their professors and their families were reflected in the results.
Also, part of the delegation of Guanajuato Juan Manuel López García of HS Centro Histórico León, Carlos Daniel Pérez Sánchez, from HS San Luis de la Paz, Nydia Andrea Calderón Chávez, of HS Celaya, and Luis Manuel Centeno Lara, of the Universidad Latina de México.
The students were advised by Dr. Rosa María García Nieto, State delegate of the Olympics of Biology and professor at the Division of Natural and Exact Sciences of Campus Guanajuato of UG, ex-olympic students and the professors of the Department of Biology; Dr. Bernardo Franco, Dr. Vianey Olmedo, M. Paulina Guzmán, Dr. Armando Obregón, M. Juana López Godínez, M. Brígido Gallegos.
The Olympics is organized by the Mexican Academy of Sciences and this year was held in the city of San Francisco, Campeche (MX) from January 22 to 26.
From the 172 initial contestants, coming from 29 entities in the country, 79 advanced to theoretical exams and passed the didactic test done in the laboratories of the Faculty of Chemical Biological Sciences of the University, the exam lasted eight hours.
In the opening act, Gerardo Montero Pérez, Rector of the Universidad Autónoma de Campeche (UACAM), hostess institution of the contests, pointed out that "education, science and technology are essential instruments for the development of the nations, it is our duty to create independent, critic citizens who are capable to defend the knowledge of our country's sovereignty."
