Guanajuato, Gto., January 28, 2017.- As a college student, Shaday Larios began questioning on the theoretical world living in the academic ambience and its practical life, this view was critical, since it led her to found a research group towards the scenic arts called Microscopy Theater, where she has been for over ten years working in different projects between Mexico and Europe.
Shaday Larios is a graduate from the degree in Spanish Letters of the University of Guanajuato and then she studies a Ph.D. in Arts in the Autónoma de Barcelona. Larios wanted to test the reflections she learned in the university was what originated Microscopy, an initiative which has participated in several international festivals in Italy, Greece, Germany, Spain, Argentina, Costa Rica and several tours in the Mexican republic. Likewise, has worked as a scenic director with several groups of theater both national and international.
The talented graduate said in an interview that Microscopy emerged from the need to come out of the virtuality of thought and try to see it functioning in relation with my context and the others'."
About the projects, she has done with this group of research and experimentation, Shaday mentioned that each one is contained of the others, meaning, every project represents something important. She pointed out that "maybe the Virgin in the closet (2009-10) has something different, because I went on my own through the towns in Italy and Greece to seeks stories related with ex-votes, to then translate them into my little objects and miniatures theater in the same towns. With this independent project, I learned a lot on oral tradition and how to work with silence giving it all the priority to the images that condensed a popular imaginarium."
Another project she highlighted was Sololoy (2011-2013) "a piece of toys and dolls I made with my sister Lazua Larios, with music of Su Arbot, a pleasure that took us to many corners. Crucial too, since I never stopped working with the memory and with the notion of theater of documentary objects. Now, everything has turned around since in 2013 I associated with Oligor from Spain, and we are Oligor and Microscopy.
The symbolic role of theater
Facing the question on the social function of theater today, Shaday mentioned that all citizens have the same responsibility of worrying and attending the reality we live in. However, she said that "it seems that theater and the performance experiences can fulfill a powerful symbolic role as alternative spaces to ease specific deficiencies of which the State and the official means don't take care of."
She continued saying that "ideally we could also think and accept dissent as a union –if there is one—to reflect on the reasons to be of the very own practice within a hurt, violented, and unequal country like ours. But I believe that the purest function begins from the entity called theater, is aware of its own production strategies and internal distribution, passing through the ways we pretend to make us visible, transmissible until reaching a collective encounter."
"We need to knock down the idea of the illustrative of the public complaints through theater, this is, it doesn't matter for a play to pretend a such content when it is operated by itself from a system of sustained control by rigid hierarchies where they still practice the abuse of power and artistic egotism. I think that currently, one of the most important social functions of the theater to carefully review, is the ethical coherence between what is done and what is said, in all relations that sustain their possibility", she pointed.
To finalize, she refers the University of Guanajuato provided her different tools to develop professionally, such as the encounter weeks between the schools of plastic arts, philosophy, music and languages. "We create many things together, we thought how to articulate from our territories and how to collaborate with others. Generally, we created webbings of discipline from our young vision, that ended presenting in the Teatro Principal."
"I don't know if friendship can be considered "as a tool for the professional development" but from that generation of the University of Guanajuato, emerged affective bonds inseparable among some of us who still collaborating and inventing together today."
