Guanajuato, Gto., February 11, 2017.-According the United Nations (UN), in a study made in 14 countries, the probabilities that the students finish a degree, a master and a doctorate, somewhat related with science, is of 18%, 8% and 2% respectively, while the probability for male students is 37%, 18% and 6%.
Despite the statistics, at the University of Guanajuato highlights the labor of women in science, since in the institution there are researchers who generate knowledge with academic proposals and academic strategies in different scientific disciplines.
Last year, at the University of Guanajuato (UG), 61 women were enrolled in the programs of Physics Engineering, Chemistry, Electric and Biomedical; 24 in the master degrees in Physics and Applied Sciences, and 8 in the Doctorate in Physics.
This cycles, the Division of Sciences and Engineering of Campus Leon, which in total of its programs of master and major in the Census of the National Quality Postgraduate Program (two of them considered of international competence), has 22 female students enrolled in master degrees –8 in Physics and 14 in Applied Sciences—.
One of them is, Dr. Xóchitl Sánchez Lozano, who works as a professor-researcher at the Department of Physics in the Division of Sciences and Engineering of Campus Leon. Although the index of women who study Physics are low, since an early age Dr. Xóchitl felt the need to know how the different laws of nature work, and so, she decided to study such science until having a postgraduate and continue exercising her profession.
Her passion for science is wide, so she currently works in distinct research lines such as: foundations of quantum mechanics, communication and quantum cryptography, optic fibers and wave guides, just to mention some.
On purpose of the International Day of the Women and Girl in Science, Dr. Sánchez Lozano said that it can be reinforced if there is more diffusion of work of the same and if they start to influence different views since childhood.
As an example, she used the production of toys made for boys and girls, "sometimes the girls are offered only toys to dedicate to certain roles in society (motherhood, house work) which can also do if they so desire. But, boys are offered a different kind of toys. I believe that part of the work can begin with the parents, they are apt to tell their daughters that they can also use other games, that they can create, invent and be whatever they want."
The researcher used that as an example because since she was a girl, she was interested in another kind of toys. It was how she discovered her gender is not a limit to dedicate to her interests. "Women has a lot to do in the science area and generate wellbeing in our community. We don't have to be afraid, there are many ways to make science, there is time for everything, for the personal life women desire at the same time of her profession or academic work. Let's continue joining efforts", she indicated.
From her everyday performance in the Laboratory of Quantum Applications of the University of Guanajuato, Dr. Xóchitl Sánchez Lozano together with a research group, work in a project of great national and international scientific impact on quantum cryptography.
