Salamanca, Gto. February 24, 2017.- Members of the Department of Electronics of the University of Guanajuato (UG), patented a system to detect the fingers movements, based in optic fibers, achieving applications in the areas of bionics, biotechnology, optical sensors, optical filters, as well as the tuning of pulse and continuous lasers.

The inventors are Dr. Julián Moisés Estudillo Ayala, Dr. Mario Alberto Ibarra Manzano, professors of the Division of Engineering of Campus Irapuato-Salamanca of UG, who worked together with Jesús Norberto Guerrero Tabares, Francisco Javier Mendoza Galindo and Carlos Andrés Pérez Ramírez, graduate from the program of Engineering in Communications and Electronics of the same Division, who currently study a postgraduate in another place.

The patent is an optic-electronic system capable of detecting and reproducing the finger movements in real time using as a sensor, a Long Period Fiber Grating (LPFG) was fabricated by the technique or electronic arch, making the signal processing in real time for each finger, and so, reproduce the movement of the fingers in a prosthetic.

The optic fiber sensors were fabricated and implement by the same college students, explained Dr. Estudillo, by reminding that this project was negotiated on early 2012, and it was through a research he was doing in optic fiber gratings, in optical sensors.

The project was made with the help of Dr. Mario Ibarra in instrumenting and signal processing, achieving the first place in the category of Invention (Degree), in the Seventh Contest of Creativity and Innovation. After participating in other contests and obtain other prizes, they decided to submit the project as a patent before the Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) and for that, they had the help of the University of Guanajuato.

It is worth mentioning that, the project was completely made at the Division of Engineering with material and equipment at the lab that have been submitted to summons by the National Council of Science and Technology, the State Council of Science and Technology and the Direction of Support for Research and Postgraduate of the own university.
