
Guanajuato, Gto., March 26, 2017.- Environmental Engineering and International Trade students of the University of Guanajuato (UG), obtained the second place in the Water Hackathon 2017 organized by Centro Fox with the purpose to generate ideas and plant innovative solutions to address the problematic for water's future and the sustainability it represents.
Everardo Jaramillo Rocha and Adrián Quezada Torres, students of the degree in Environmental Engineering and Luis Enrique Jaramillo Landeros, from the degree in International Trade; as well as Saúl Marcelo Marín Medina, Mechatronics student at the School of Scientific and Technological Studies –CECyTE—unit Guanajuato; formed the "defECO" team and designed a prototype of a dry bathroom, obtaining the second place among 94 participants.
This prototype consists in handling organic residues coming from human urine and excretion where they implanted a technology and web application that allows to provide a service of resolution and residue treatment.
In an interview, Everardo Jaramillo, recognized that "it was a great surprise and an excellent result for the work we did between all of us and the contributions we made as students of different disciplines. It was a challenge, since we hadn't worked as a team before."
He mentioned what stood out of their project was that "we did a business model to promote the production and functions of the prototype; design the technical parts of the bathroom and developed the electronic part for the web application and electronic sensors for the same", which allowed them to be the only team of Guanajuato to receive an award.
In a day and a half, they designed a "totally applicable project for the rural and urban development, but we are promoting it has improvements to be more efficient."
The members of the team received thirty thousand pesos with the commitment to use it in developing the prototype and the support to participate in other national competitions that allows them to perfect and diffuse the same.
As part of the extension and liaison activities, students of the University of Guanajuato of the degrees in Administrative Information Systems and Quality and Productivity Managements and Chemical Engineering, of Campus Guanajuato participate in the Water Hackathon 2017.
This way, the students reaffirm their commitment with society through the development of vanguard solutions where they apply their solid skills received through their formation at the University of Guanajuato.
This event is a platform to transform the ideas in solutions, solve problems and needs in a creative way and through technology, encouraging collaboration, self-expression and practical learning. Besides, it is a seeder, that seeks the formation and motivation of those who are agents of change for themselves, their families, their environment and their country.
