Guanajuato, Gto., April 16, 2017.- Creating a synchrotron in Mexico would represent a concrete investment with great reach, by using a new technology with scientific observation instruments of use in natural and social science, as well as in the industry, being a detonator in the country's economy.

Knowing this and with the purpose to improve the results of several research, the University of Guanajuato (UG) leads the Themed Network of Light Users Synchrotron (REDTULS), who seek funds to create a synchrotron –facilities where electrons are accelerated—in Mexico and this years was benefited with resources from the National Council of Science and Technology (Conacyt).

That is what the REDTULS General Coordinator, Dr. Mayra Cuéllar Cruz revealed, who told that in Mexico, there is a very active users community of light or radiation synchrotron and in constant expansion, and not having one in the country makes them use another one in another nation.

In the world, there are 48 synchrotrons in 23 countries, all of them from the Organization for the Cooperation and Economic Developments (OCDE) and Mexico is the only who doesn't have one, ensured Dr. Cuéllar, who is also a scholar in the Department of Biology of the Division of Natural and Exact Sciences of Campus Guanajuato of UG.

She mentions a reason that has prevented the installation of a light synchrotron in Mexico is its high cost, but assures that in the long term, it will be an excellent scientific investment.

She clears that the cost of the project cannot be financed institutionally or by the state, therefore, it must be a national initiative, thus the scientific need to join efforts that allow to support and promote the construction of a work line in some of the world's synchrotrons and then, construct one in Mexico.

The structure, function, promotion and organization of REDTULS has managed to recruit almost all the synchrotron users in Mexico; this, places them as a consolidated group in the country, its beginnings in 2011 were encouraged by the Director of Support for Research and Postgraduate, Dr. Mauro Napsuciale together with UNAM, CINVESTAV and other educational institutions throughout the republic.

The functions the synchrotron can do in health is to develop drugs based on protein infraction, to make mammography and locate thrombi in arteries. In Technology, it can be used in any device with touch screen.

In Chemistry, you can photograph each light pulse, so it can follow a chemical reaction with nanosecond intervals, also, analyze the chemical elements, molecular structures, as well as the organic and inorganic chemical processes.

It is used to know the state of the matter at 5,000ºC and 3.6 million bars, to try and answer the question of which is the real structure of the iron and nickel alloys in the center of the earth.

In structural biology, it is used to research the position in the space of each one of the molecules, of small viruses and proteins, which is the first step to make specific drugs.

Finally, all the students and researchers are invited to be a part of this network to give continuity and improve their research; you can reach Dr. Mayra Cuéllar Cruz at Esta dirección de correo electrónico está protegida contra spambots.
