León, Gto., May 10, 2017.- "For me, to make science is to be a kid every day and try to understand the world by playing with it", described the researcher of the University of Guanajuato (UG), Dr. Ma. Isabel Delgadillo Cano, who oversees the Laboratory of Mechanical Properties of Biomaterials.
The laboratory is found at the Division of Sciences and Engineering (DCI) of Campus León, the professors of Physics Engineering analyzes, next to her collaborators, biological samples or samples with possible biological applications.
Dr. Delgadillo Cano explained why they research the mechanical properties, meaning, how certain materials will react with compression, traction or mechanical resonance, to characterize the samples and know how they can be implemented.
Some examples
An application, are the scaffolding for cells and tissues. This is, they seek for the scaffold to integrate with the tissue and favor internal healing, for which they work in collaboration with another team of the Division, where they elaborate collagen biomaterials and scaffolding so they can apply it on soft tissue.
Once applied to such tissues, they make sort of a "bandage", but cells infiltrate in it and that scaffold is reabsorbed by the human body, with the purpose to favor internal healing. These scaffolding can be obtained from intestinal tissue of animal esophagus, or well from purified collagen for various applications, such as in skin and bladder.
As part of the interinstitutional projects, they work with an external researcher that explores how to protect dentine. Dentine is the hardest component of the dental structure; its microstructure and properties are the main determinants in almost all the procedures of restorative dentistry.
She delved that they teeth samples, from which they wish to know the displacement pattern they have when pressure is applied. The essential idea is to observe how different layers react and how they react after being covered.
Finally, Dr. Ma. Isabel Delgadillo Cano, expressed to the student community, "I'd recommend making an effort on learning and understanding, observe how everything works, since from the social or hard science point of view, and try to move things to make a better world."
