fomentan-una-cultura-de-tolerancia-ug-ugtoGuanajuato, Gto., May 20, 2017.- As part of the commitment to mainstream the culture of gender and promote a culture of equality and peace, there was a journey which concluded with two talks and a conference, as part of the activities that the University of Guanajuato (UG) prepared for the International Day against homophobia, lesbo phobia and transphobia.

In the Auditorium of the Division of Engineering unit Belén, of Campus Guanajuato, were present the General Coordinator of the Collective "Red de Juventudes Trans México", Jessica Marjane Durán Franco; the visual artist Gabriel Bruno García, producer of photobook "Naked Men"; and M. Federico Carlos Alberto Ruenes Torres, student of the Doctorate in Social Sciences at UG's Campus Leon; also, the Coordinator of the Institutional Program of Gender Equality of the University of Guanajuato (UGénero), M. Abraham Nemesio Serrato Guzmán.

In the master conference "Hate crimes by homophobia and transphobia", the activist Jessica Marjane Durán revealed that the life expectancy of trans women in Latin America is from 30-35 years, because of the high index of hate crimes, but also suicides, due to the lack of opportunities and discrimination.

She revealed that Mexico occupied the second place in Latin America in hate crimes during 1995-2006, according the annual Report of hate crimes by homophobia, published by the Civil Organization Letter S.

According a report from the Interamerican Commission of Human Rights (2015), from the 1,218-murdered people for prejudices against LGBTTTI members, more than 80% of them previously have been victimized, which gives an idea of the violence they face.

She mentioned that many of the pending topics in Mexico and Latin America, such as guaranteeing to trans people access to education (with teachers and authorities who are aware and sensitized towards sexual diversity); the full respect for their labor and health rights, and in general, to create the proper conditions so they can have a worthy life.

M. Federico Carlos Alberto Ruenes Torres mentioned in his talk "Homophobia and new family models", that the family, as first socialization space, constitutes a place of integration and acknowledgement, hence, the importance to generate public policies to protect the diverse families.

Not acknowledging their rights puts democracy in a bad place, he warned, and was sorry for the homophobic public policies which only recognize the regulatory heteropatriarchal model that still prevail.

Gabriel Bruno García, produce of "Naked Men", exposed that the project emerged because they wanted to show images to show Mexican trans men, with the intention to show "other possible bodies". In the book, the photographs come with texts which give voice to the characters of the work.

He detailed that it includes eight images of transmen, who show there aren't in the worng body, since there is only one, or a correct body. To explain this, Gabriel quoted a phrase in the books, where Nathan Ambriz says that "there are many ways to be, and a hate speech must not be integrated towards my own body".

After a Q&A session, the UGénero's coordinator, M. Abraham Nemesio Serrato Guzmán, reaffirmed the commitment of the House of Studies with the construction of an inclusive and respectful culture of the human rights. At the same time, he reminded the services offered through the UGénero's office, the free online course and workshops and present trainings available for the university community.

Likewise, he reminded that as part of the commemorative program of the International Day against homophobia, lesbo phobia and transphobia, next May 23rd there will be a discussion table at the Division of Life Sciences of Campus Irapuato-Salamanca, with the topic "Sexual orientations and generic sex identity: from the private space to the public space", and the conference "Hate crimes by homophobia and transphobia", given by Silverio Ramírez Urbina, from the Collective SERes.
