León, Gto., May 20, 2017.- "It is important to protect the environment and the consumers, using technology tools and create strategies to improve food production", with these words Dr. Harumi Shimada Beltrán, explained the importance to produce a larger quantity of food without affecting the environment, and have a positive impact in the world's population by reducing the indexes of nourishment, hunger and diseases.

Dr. Harumi participated in the conference "What we know and what we don't know about food and biotechnology", which was part of the commemorative activities for the International Day of Fascination for Plants, which was held at the venue San Carlos of Campus León of the University of Guanajuato (UG).

It is important to mention that this day is promoted by the European Plant Science Organization (EPSO) which seeks to raise awareness for the future generations on the importance of the research of plants, their care and its conservation.

In her intervention, Dr. Harumi talked about biotechnology and the sectors where it is applied, such as the agricultural and food industry, and she emphasized of the increment of the production of biotechnological products, among them, detergents, plastic, food and vaccines. Also, she emphasized in the benefits that can be achieved, such as the increment for the food production and taking care of the environment, "it is required to increase the food production because of the increment in the world's population and fight malnourishment deaths," she mentioned.

At the end of the conference, there was an art contest with corn "EnMaizarte" where the winners were Vanessa Baéz Gutiérrez and Valeria Chávez García, both students of the fourth semester of the major in Nutrition of Campus Leon.

The event's coordinator, Dr. Sandra Balderas, thanked the attendants for their presence and handed an award for the participation to Dr. Harumi, who comes from the Escuela Nacional de Estudios Superiores (ENES) Unit Leon.
