Irapuato, Gto. June 13, 2017.- Facing the deterioration of the Lerma river, the University of Guanajuato (UG) could collaborate with studies that allow the Irrigation District 011 to manage resources to attend the affluent.

The President of the Irrigation District 011, Mr. Agustín Robles Montenegro, proposed to the Rector of Campus Irapuato-Salamanca of UG, Dr. Armando Gallegos Muñoz, a collaboration with studies from academics and thesis makers which allow to have a serious diagnosis of the Lerma.

The studies would be made in the territory of Guanajuato, although the river is born in the state of Mexico, passing through Querétaro, Guanajuato and Michoacán, until it ends in the Chapala lake.

During the meeting, possible options of collaboration were mentioned, starting with a study of the storm water channels from the students of mechatronic, with the recording of drones to make a classification by stages, which would ease the detection of affected or invaded zones. Another option would be the real measurement of the water recharges made by thesis makers led by professors.

Currently, the University of Guanajuato occupies a vocal in the Council of the Lerma Chapala basin, whose representative is Dr. Eduardo Salazar Solís, professor-researcher of the Division of Life Sciences of Campus Irapuato-Salamanca and who has an experience of more than 35 years in the agri-food area.

Another researcher of Campus involved in the studies related with water and pollution, is the professor of the Department of Environmental Sciences, Dr. Ricardo González Barbosa, who has collaborated with governmental organisms with research of environmental impact.

This way, the University of Guanajuato will seek to contribute to society through its tasks of liaison and research to answer the needs of the environment.

It is important to mention that the social objective of the Irrigation District 011 Lerma River Guanajuato, is to receive from the National Commission of Water (CONAGUA) the volume to the vital liquid in block for its distribution among the partners, according the terms of their concessions.

Also, it promotes the agricultural research in demonstrative parcels, provides the producers with information and orientation in design and planning of programs related with agriculture and water.
