Guanajuato, Gto., June 22, 2017.- Convinced that taking care of the environment "is a topic of all", and that the acquired knowledge in the degree of Environmental Engineering can be taken to larger audiences, to communities and educational centers. The student from the University of Guanajuato (UG) Everardo Jaramillo Rocha has become an important promoter, which granted him the Award Encouragement of the Environmental Culture 2017, in the school category.
Everardo was involved in projects related with environmental culture before he entered the degree in Environmental Engineering, and now, he is about to conclude his studies; he still is convinced of the importance to show environment friendly alternatives.
So, he has an active participation with courses, talks and workshops with topics such as bioconstruction, application of ecotechnologies, urban orchards, material recycling, natural fertilizers and cactus reproduction, among others.
The topics that he addresses "are largely backed by the courses he has taken during the degree. I try to translate this material (learnt in college) with the audience I'm dealing with, be that communities, schools or high schools", explains Jaramillo.
He remarks the project "Baños secos", which allows to handle excretions and urine without using water. This is made to attend the problem related with water shortage of the lack of sewer systems in communities.
The dry bathroom prototype was a teamwork, in which two UG students participated, Everardo Jaramillo and Adrián Quezada Torres, and a student of the Colegio de Estudios Científicos y Tecnológicos (CECyTE) unit Guanajuato, Saúl Marcelo Marín Medina. With this project, they won the second place in the Water Hackathon 2017 organized by Centro Fox.
In addition, the "dry bathrooms" were taken to surrounding communities to Cristo Rey, such as Sangre de Cristo, Mexiamora and San Pedro Gilmonene. It was a joint effort, where a mining business provided the material, the habitants the work force, while UG students trained the people so they learned how to properly treat the waste and then, create biofertilizer.
The work done by Jaramillo Rocha has granted him the Youth State Award in Protecting the Environment (2015), the Municipal Youth Award (2016) and now the Award for Encouraging the Environmental Culture 2017, granted by the Instituto Estatal de Ecología, among other awards.
Currently, he is making a five week stay in the province of Arauco, Chile, where he participated as a mentor in community entrepreneur projects, where he helps to pinpoint the projects, so they can be economically and environmentally sustainable.
