Ciudad de México, June 23, 2017.- With the purpose to form professionals who influence in constructing a democratic and more just society, the University of Guanajuato (UG), together with other three higher education institutions and the National Commission for Human Rights (CNDH) signed an agreement to create the Interinstitutional Doctorate in Human Rights.
The program is a joint effort between the University of Guanajuato, the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur, the Universidad Autónoma de Campeche, the Universidad Autónoma de Tlaxcala, and CNDH, who with the creation of the doctorate continue with a collaboration that began a year ago, when they joined to offer the Interinstitutional Master degree in Human Rights.
During the program's presentation, at CNDH facilities, UG's General Rector, Dr. Luis Felipe Guerrero Agripino, reflected on the quality and opportunity of this doctorate, that proves that the universities have assumed a commitment with human rights that goes beyond what the constitutional regulations establishes, it is about –he said—an "ethical commitment."
Dr. Guerrero sustained that currently, human rights constitute one of the most important priorities in the national agenda. He added that is a topic that mustn't be taken as spare change to gain popularity, since "it hurts simulation."
"That is why we refer to the academic part", mentioned while talking about the relevance of this doctorate. In the defense of human rights, research and teaching must not give in to pressures of power, nor wishes or prejudices of determined social sectors. "For that you require a huge commitment, a deep study and a great sensibility", sustained UG's General Rector.
He is fully convinced that Mexico can generate high impact research on human rights, because the country has a large intellectual and academic archive, and you require that archive to influence in generating more and more public policies.
CNDH's President, Lic. Luis Raúl González Pérez, said this act strengthens a natural alliance between the academy and the state's institutions, who have the common objective to defend the human dignity and rights.
He reaffirmed his conviction that one of the most powerful ways to promote respect for human rights is education, so he thanked for the trust from the rectors of the participating universities to continue with this task which started a year ago.
Lic. González Pérez informed that the summon for the interinstitutional doctorate will be launched next term, so the academic work may begin next year.
The research lines of the doctorate are: Democracy and human rights; Justice systems and human rights; Economic, social, cultural and environmental rights; as well as, Serious violations of human rights.
During the program's presentation, M. Rubén Reyes Córdoba, Rector of the Universidad Autónoma de Tlaxcala, expressed that knowing the human rights is fundamental to construct a culture of peace, and therefore, for a pacific and harmonic social coexistence.
In his intervention, Dr. Gustavo Rodolfo Cruz Chávez, Rector of the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur, declared that as public higher education institutions, there is a big responsibility to address topics such as the defense of human rights, which requires to gather wills and create programs so the country may have professionals who stand for the human rights.
Also, Lic. Gerardo Montero Pérez, Rector of the Universidad Autónoma de Campeche, highlighted the importance that, again, four state universities join efforts with CNDH to constitute a more just society, because in them –he reminded—not only are professionals formed, but the new generations of citizens.
