León, Gto., July 28, 2017.- With the purpose to develop program to provide attention to disabled people who live in the city of San Diego de la Unión, the project "Terapia física basada en la comunidad" (Community based Physical Therapy) will be set on motion. This project is the joint work of student from Campus León of the University of Guanajuato (UG) and the "Instituto Guanajuatense para personas con discapacidad (INGUDIS)".

Silvia Mariana de Anda, student of the degree in Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, will be responsible for starting the project as part of the professional social service's activities where she will have to make a situational diagnosis to identify the rehabilitation services the habitants have in the northeastern part of the state of Guanajuato. Also, she will have to identify the type of patients they attend, their health needs and the way to intervene to improve their quality of life.

Another way they seek to contribute to improve the situation of people with a disability is, to promote a favorable change through health for a better accessibility to employment, respect for destined spaces in public transport, among others. The project will last a year and will begin this August 15th.

In an interview, Dr. Beatriz González Sandoval, Coordinator of the Degree in Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation of Campus Leon, mentioned that: "the students, when they collaborate with other institutions, they face a reality that favors their competencies, in addition of learning how to solve different problems that present." She highlighted that they collaborate with institutions such as the Teletón Children's Rehabilitation Center (CRIT), INGUDIS and civil associations that attends the population.

According to data collected from the National Survey of the Demographic Dynamic (ENADID) 2014, the most frequent disabilities in the nation are: walk, go up or down using the legs (64.1%), and sight, although using glasses (58.4%), the main detonators of disabilities in the country are illnesses (41.3%) and advanced age (33.1%).

In the case of the State of Guanajuato, it is in the 11th position of the entities with more rate of people with a disability, where we can find those who present an impediment to walk, go up or down using the legs with a 60.8%, sight (even with glasses) a 52.6%, learn, remember or concentrate with a 35.9%.
