Guanajuato, Gto., August 3, 2017.- In a display of the social commitment that distinguishes the University of Guanajuato (UG), there was a welcome ceremony for the 26 students that compose the second generation of the Regional Equity Program (PER), aimed for youth with an outstanding academic trajectory and lack resources to finance their studies in the higher level.
This program is possible thanks to a sum of efforts with the Department of Education of Guanajuato (SEG), and shows that a great project doesn't derive from only one person, but from a collaborative effort, mentioned at the event UG President, Dr. Luis Felipe Guerrero Agripino.
He also mentioned that UG's Honorable Patronage, led by Ing. Jorge Videgaray Verdad, negotiated one million pesos more for the Regional Equity Program, which contributes to its strengthening.
PER answers the social spirit "that other generations have left us as legacy", mentioned Dr. Agripino, who added that a public university cannot be an institution who only observes and assumes as object of study the social inequality. The University, highlighted, cannot remain indifferent when there are talented youth and lack opportunities.
When congratulating the 20 women and 6 men that will enter UG as part of the second generation of the program, he reminded them that they have won the opportunity, and extended an acknowledgement to the parents, whom he thanked for trusting in the University of Guanajuato and exhorted them to work in team for a common project, the future of their children.
M. Ximena María Alarcón Verduzco, General Director of High Education, representing Ing. Eusebio Vega Pérez, Secretary of Education of the State of Guanajuato (SEG), congratulated the youth who are part of the program, as well as their families for the support in the path that –she warned—will be hard, but will result in a personal, professional and human growth.
Likewise, she reaffirmed the interest of SEG to tighten collaboration liaisons with the University of Guanajuato, to widen education opportunities to youth in the far zones of the state.
In the welcome message to the members of the second generation of the PER, UG's Academic Secretary, Dr. Raúl Arias Lovillo, sustained that the program is a symbol of the social commitment of UG, which has a special relevance because in Mexico, having access to university studies is still a privilege.
Noé Alonso Rodríguez Martínez, student of PER's first generation, exhorted his partners to fight for a dream that has already began. Also, he reminded that the program will not only affect their lives, but their families, hence, on behalf of his partners, thanked for the opportunity to be part of UG, since, he said "I wanted so bad to continue studying, but the chances were slim."
Representing who in this event received the letters of acceptance to UG, spoke Yanet Nicasio Morales, from La Lagunilla de Puruagua, in the city of Jerécuaro. The young lady told that in their community they only have elementary school, so she had to walk over an hour to study in high school. "With the support from my parents, teacher and my desire to grow, that obstacle wasn't an impediment" to conclude her studies, hence, she expressed pride and gratefulness for having entered "one of the best universities of the country."
The second generation is composed by students from cities such as Victoria, Atarjea, Santa Catarina, Xichú, Jerécuaro, Pueblo Nuevo, Ocampo, San Felipe, Dolores Hidalgo, Santa Cruz de Juventino Rosas, San Diego de la Unión and San Miguel de Allende.
To welcome them to UG, were present members of the board of the university, unipersonal authorities and representatives of collegiate organs, as well as families of who received the benefits from PER.
