Guanajuato, Gto., August 15, 2017.- Rodolfo Ferro Pérez, student of the degree in Mathematics at Campus Guanajuato of the University of Guanajuato (UG), developed the research "Adapting Machine Learning Techniques for Chemistry Problems" in Harvard University, this, after a two-month stay in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical-Biology at the American institution.
According Rodolfo Ferro, the research consists in applying mathematical-computing techniques for the development of tools that attack problems in Chemistry topics, using machine learning techniques, which allow them to classify or predict information, such as common use apps do so like Netflix or Spotify.
"There are molecular properties that are handled in the smallest levels, whose experimental and computing calculus is very expensive; however, if you have several molecules calculated and don't know its properties, is relatively easier to study the properties you already know, to give an approximation of the characteristics of the new molecule."
Part of the research's idea, was to develop a programming library that could be used to solve the mentioned problematic, same as the student mentions, "it is pretended to be public so any person in the world can access to it and install it in any computer."
Also, it is predicted for late August this year, to make the first publication of the research, together with a Harvard researcher.
For two months, Rodolfo Ferro had the opportunity to learn different techniques that can be applied generally to several areas not only on the side of science "but for other projects in social areas", he says.
In that sense, he assures that the learnt knowledge and techniques during the research stay, "will help me for personal projects that I want to develop."
In his time in Harvard University, the college student made other activities with the purpose to enrich the experience, highlighting his encounter with the Consul of Mexico in Boston, Emilio Rabasa Gamboa and his participation in a workshop with Frank Wilczek, Physics Nobel Award winner in 2004, thanks to the opportunity provided by the team of Science Clubs Mexico.
Likewise, together with Carlos Outerial, another participant, uploaded the first podcast in Mexico about Python which already has presence in Latin America and had the chance to be advised directly from Benjamin Sánchez, graduate from the Department of Mathematics of the University of Guanajuato and current doctorate student at Harvard.
We have to remember that together with Ricardo Mirón, Rodolfo Ferro participated last May in the Hackathon 2017 organized by Centro Fox, where they were winners of the event.
