Tierra Blanca, Gto., August 24, 2017.- With guarded reforestation actions, the community of the Interdisciplinary Center of the Northeast of the University of Guanajuato (CINUG) concurs with inhabitants and authorities from the three government levels in the care of a natural protected area known as Pinal de El Zamorano.

The university community collaborated with the Municipal Presidency of Tierra Blanca, the "Comisión Nacional Forestal (Conafor)", the Department of Agri-Food and Rural Development (SDAyR), the "Instituto de Ecología de Guanajuato (IEG)", the Reserve of the Biosphere Sierra Gorda of Guanajuato, the Mayordomías of the Santa Cruz del Pinal, as well as representatives of the land "El Cajón" of Tierra Blanca to continue with the goal to spread 3,825 Abies religiosa plants.

In that zone, the participants planted nearly 400 Abies religiosa plants, a conifer from the pinaceous family, a fir native to the mountains of central and southern Mexico and western Guatemala.

The 25cm tall plants were grafted atop the El Pinal de El Zamorano, where trees have been dying and little natural regeneration has occurred, hence, the importance to protect and preserve the ecological diversity, the ecosystems and the species in northeastern Guanajuato.

El Pinal de El Zamorano covers the cities of Tierra Blanca, San José Iturbide and the state of Querétaro, with a registry of 441 flora. As for fauna, they have 171 registered species and 39 species in status of protection or endemic.

CINUG's Professor Edgar Pedro Méndez Vázquez and the engineer Alfredo Mozqueda Córdova, Coordinator of such center, as well as Dr. José Luis Lara Valdez of the División of Social Sciences and Humanities of Campus Guanajuato, summoned the students to participate in the second ascent to the pinal.

In 2016, authorities from different levels made reforesting actions in the Pinal de El Zamorano, gathering adepts to participate in subsequent reforestation phases seeking the preservation of water and reduce the erosion of the soil in that zone.

These activities encourage the formation of the members of the university community in the dimensions of environment and sustainability, to strengthen the environmental perspective according the Educational Model and the Institutional Development Plan.
