León, Gto September 4, 2017.-With the project "Give me five Guanajuato" Jaime Francisco Ortíz Velázquez, student of the fifth semester of the Medical Surgeon degree at Campus León of the University of Guanajuato (UG), received a scholarship to participate in the intern program in The Washington Center in Washington, D.C., USA.
This project is done in collaboration with Martín Becerra Díaz, and it has the objective to generate low-cost prosthesis to improve the quality of life of low income children in Guanajuato.
While participating in the Program Governors: Initiative Guanajuato in Washington, D.C., he was chosen as one of the ten winners, so he will make an internship in the American capital from September 3 to December 9 of this year; there he will work with specialists and acquire skills for the global market through internships in organisms, companies and diplomatic partners of The Washington Center.
Likewise, he will have a multicultural experience by relating with people from other countries with initiatives that seek a social impact to improve health and education.
Jaime Ortiz commented in an interview that such prosthesis is designed to be printed in 3D printers and "have some advantages: low cost, plus the material is more durable and lighter". Also, at his return, he will submit his project as social service so students from other areas may join and enrich the initiative and create a real impact in the population who requires an arm, forearm and hand prosthesis. He added that "the project is about generating a multidisciplinary, social service where various health degrees and engineering merge, so by the end of the semester, they develop a low-cost prosthesis to people with low income."
At the same time, during his stay in The Washington Center, he will make his internship in the Hispanic Association of Medics, where he will obtain theoretical tools and applicable practices for his project.
