Guanajuato, Gto., September 15, 2017.- Within the Latin American Day of the Image of the Woman in Communication Media, the "Festival de las artes de participación por la igualdad de género" was held at the Mesón de San Antonio of the University of Guanajuato (UG).
The festival is part of a series of activities made by the Participatory Art Collective of the Institutional Program of Gender Equality (UGénero) in different university venues, as part of the strategy to divulge this program with ludic and more participative strategies.
Participatory arts seek to transcend and question the traditional structure of attending arts events, where there is a show and a spectator, "barriers don't exist here and we seek the participation of the audience in the artistic activity", mentioned UGénero's coordinator, M. Abraham Nemesio Serrato Guzmán.
From September 12 – 19, there will be spontaneous theatre, and drama-cinema workshops in different academic venues. In the Mesón de San Antonio, there was a festival of participatory arts for gender equality, and had the intention to encourage the reflection on the image of a woman in marketing, as a sexual object and consumption.
"The idea is to generate new intervention strategies in the gender matter, placing people in an active position that leads to reflection and question the way we have been socialized as men and women", added M. Serrato Guzmán.
Carlos Camarillo, member of the Participatory Arts Collective, said that in it, people from different disciplines, artists and people who make group work participate from different territories such as psychology and sociology. "We gather to develop practices that through the artistic languages, promote the participation of the audience on any activity", he referred.
At the Mesón de San Antonio, there was a participation device which, through a photograph exhibit, with the central topic of the Latin American Day of the Image of the Woman in Media, which is celebrated on September 14.
The photographs showed how the image of a woman is manipulated in the media; to detonate a collective conversation, "share feelings, reflection" and think of what posture to take on a speech that dictates how a woman should be, added Carlos Camarillo.
In this festival, members of the university community and public intervened, mostly women; which, in the opinion of Carlos Camarillo, reveals that there are men who are not interested in questioning the socially assigned roles, "men don't want to leave their privileges, they don't even allow questioning", he considered.
He revealed that next, through the program UGénero, they will work on strategies so these devices enter the university spaces and reach people that, maybe, haven't been interested in the topic, but through these strategies "could hear what the others need to say about it", mentioned the artist.
