Guanajuato, Gto., September 18, 2017.- The "Procuraduría Ambiental y de Ordenamiento Territorial del Estado de Guanajuato (PAOT)," handed the Best Environmental Practices distinction to seven venues of the University of Guanajuato (UG), in recognition to the work done in favor of the environment's care.
The venues who received such distinction were: Yerbabuena, which belongs to the Division of Social Sciences and Humanities of Campus Guanajuato; San Carlos, of the Division of Health Sciences, Campus León; El Copal, of the Division of Life Sciences; and Yuriria, of the Department of Multidisciplinary Studies of the Division of Engineering, both belong to Campus Irapuato-Salamanca; and the high schools of León, Salvatierra and Guanajuato.
UG's President, Dr. Luis Felipe Guerrero Agripino, congratulated the community who worked to obtain the distinction and reaffirmed the institution's commitment, which aspires to become a referent in the environment care.
He highlighted that Mexico is the fourth country with the largest biological diversity in the world, the second with more knowledge in Herbalism and medicinal plants; and occupies the first place in America with places declared World's Natural patrimony, indicators that demand and effort and commit even more in protecting the environment.
Dr. Juan Ángel Mejía Gómez, Director of the Institute of Ecology of the State of Guanajuato, remembered, before occupying this position, he was responsible for UG's Environmental Handling Program; hence, he highlighted the excellent liaison UG has with environmental authorities.
At the ceremony, the Environmental and Territorial Ordnance Attorney of the State of Guanajuato, Architect Juan Pablo Luna Mercado, mentioned that the Good Environmental Practices distinction promotes the responsible use of resources such as water, energy, and an adequate handling of the waste.
What these university venues have done with the best environmental practices –he exemplified—has saved nearly 640m3 of water, meaning, a family of four can have water for a bit more than two years. So, representing the state government, he expressed his recognition to the university community and invited it to continue participating in the program.
At the beginning of the ceremony, UG's Academic Secretary, Dr. Raúl Arias Lovillo, praised the excellent work of the academic entities, and sustained that implementing good environmental practices, has a positive impact in approximately, 12,182 college students.
At the event were present: The Director of the High School College, Dr. J. Merced Rizo Carmona, who received the distinction that corresponded to the high schools in Guanajuato, Salvatierra and León. The Rector of Campus Irapuato-Salamanca, Dr. Armando Gallegos Muñoz; the Rector of Campus Celaya-Salvatierra, Dr. Graciela Ma. de la Luz Ruiz Aguilar; the Rector of Campus León, Dr. Carlos Hidalgo Valadez; and, the Academic Secretary of Campus Guanajuato, Dr. Claudia Gutiérrez Padilla.
The directors of the entities in high and higher levels also attended and received the distinction; as well as who oversees the environmental handling program, among other members of the university community.
