Guanajuato, Gto., October 23, 2017.- Scenic Arts major degree students of the Division of Architecture, Art & Design (DAAD) of the University of Guanajuato (UG), will present a multidisciplinary event of theater and dance called "La Catrina. Mi origen" (The Catrina. My origin) with a script and direction of Ninna Jiménez.

At a press conference, the college student who act in the play, highlighted the importance for the public to know the origin of its customs that they usually follow, but without any deep knowledge, which is unbelievable because Mexico has a great richness.

At the conference were present the author and director of the play, Ninna Jiménez; Andrea Martínez, who plays the "Catrina" and María José Ceballos, who portrays Diego Rivera.

The college students observed that the "calavera garbancera" created by the cartoonist José Guadalupe Posada, criticized, during the Porfirian period, the indigenous people who denied their origin to dress as "European". That skeleton, was then baptized by the muralist Diego Rivera as "The Catrina", ironically calling it "fancy".

The director and author of the play, addressed the need to show the real origin of the Catrina, which many confuse with "death" or, even worse, with foreign celebrations to ours such as Halloween.

Reason why, these initiatives seek to show our roots through a fun play that tells how the character was created by José Guadalupe Posada, with a hat with ostrich feathers and then included as one more character in the painting by Diego Rivera, "Dream of a Sunday afternoon in Central Alameda", where the muralist of Guanajuato portrays himself as a child, holding hands with the Catrina.

They mentioned that they have worked in the project for over a year, with a seven-month montage and that has already been presented, successfully, in the Teatro Cervantes last August 17, so they are confident that the play will be well accepted that will present in the General Auditorium of the University of Guanajuato.

It is a fun play, they revealed, the spectators leave with a smile on their face, it is interactive and multidisciplinary, because nearly 20 actors, sing and dance, the play has violinists and percussionists live. "La Catrina is an opportunity to interpret equality, that everyone is the same inside, a skeleton, said Andrea Martínez.

This cultural event will be held by students of the Scenic Arts major of DAAD of Campus Guanajuato of the University of Guanajuato, on November 1 and 4 this year. The first function at UG's General Auditorium in the Central Building and the second function will be at the Mesón de San Antonio, both at 19hrs.
