Salamanca, Gto., November 29, 2017.- As part of the actions that the University of Guanajuato (UG) has begun to diminish the use of energy in the institution, they achieved a 10% reduction in the consumption of electricity in the venue Yuriria, even when the enrollment increasing.

This commitment to take care of the environment, recently allowed the university to obtain the State Distinction of Energetic Efficiency, thus, becoming the fourth recognition in this area.

The Coordinator of the Institutional Project of Saving and Efficient use of Electric Energy (PIAEE), Eng. Pablo Sánchez Razo, mentioned that such project conjugates actions that UG has started, some of them with no investment, and have had excellent results, such as the venue Yuriria of Campus Irapuato-Salamanca proves.

In Yuriria, they obtained annual reductions of 10% of electric energy and a diminishment of 14% in consumption per capita in electricity, "this is important to highlight because the enroll continues to grow, nevertheless, we reduced consumption, this represented nearly eleven tons of CO2 that stopped from going into the atmosphere.

The results at UG's venue Yuriria are a product of a series of actions that didn't generate any investment, such as turning off sections, when they're not in use, synchronize cameras to diminish the energetic consumption or make changes so the wells work in different hours when there's little demand, explained the Coordinator of Infrastructure and University Services of Campus Irapuato-Salamanca, architect José Luis Ramírez Orozco.

Because of the indicators obtained in the venue, the project of energetic saving will enter a second phase, where UG will invest resources to substitute obsolete technologies and implement LED lightning, which will generate a 60% saving.

On the matter, PIAEE's Coordinator, explained that measures such as the ones carried out on Yuriria, are being applied in different university venues, because the project is promoted by the General Rectory of UG.

About the state prize of Energetic Efficiency, he explained that UG obtained the State Distinction of Efficiency by proving the achieved at the Department of Multidisciplinary Sciences at Yuriria, with actions aimed for the efficient use of electric energy, saving electric energy and reducing polluting emissions.

To decrease the energetic consumption, we require a change of habits in the use of electricity, so it has been fundamental to raise awareness in the university community in the importance of the care of the environment, insisted Sánchez Razo.

PIAEE is linked to the Program of Environmental Handling and Sustainability of UG, as well as the areas related with university services and the environment's liaisons of the university venues. Together they develop activities such as the Journeys to Save Energy, focused on the generation of cultural changes in favor of the environment.

This is important, emphasized Sánchez Razo, because this way, the habits of energy consumption are not only for the institution, but they replicate in homes and then work centers. He even revealed that other universities have expressed their interest to replicate the model being used at the University of Guanajuato.
