León, Gto., December 12, 2017.- The thirteenth edition of the Diploma in Therapeutic Education in Diabetes taught at the University of Guanajuato (UG) at Campus León closed activities with a workshop for patients who have diabetes.

The graduates from this diploma had the opportunity to practice what they learned during the semester by attending two patients each, to whom they checked their blood pressure, weight, height, waist, hip, biochemical markers such as glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, back of the eye and feet.

The workshop was held in the facilities of the Mexican Association of Diabetes in Guanajuato A.C. with which UG has made a significant symbiosis because every year, they host preventive workshops for diabetes, and some students from the programs of Physical Activity and Health Sciences, Psychology and Nutrition have collaborated through the Professional and University Social Service.

Among the people who attended the workshop was Mrs. Matilde Pérez Martínez, who has lived with diabetes for 14 years and commented in an interview that she attended to get her eyes checked, while inviting people to, same as her, who live with diabetes, they must "oversee their nourishment, drink water, walk and don't stop the treatment, and go on, life continues."

Josué Daniel Reyes Morales, a surgeon from Acámbaro, mentioned that the greatest learning he obtained from the diploma was to "destroy many paradigms as health personnel we have, everything for the benefit of the people who live with diabetes, it is about improving their quality of life; we know diabetes in Mexico is causing many complications and deaths, so that is the reason why it is important to change our way we work and address our patients so we have good habits."

He mentioned that the greatest motivation to enter the diploma was the number of patients that have diabetes and many times they don't see the expected results.

Referring that the impact of this activity is quite large, because many times, people think they been taking care of and this is because there is a lack of information, so they must approach them and clear their doubts and fears.

His intervention project is focused on improving the habits of the people with diabetes that address in the Center of Integral Attention of Essential Health Services (CAISES) of Jerécuaro; he said that "the best treatment is the self-care of people with and without diabetes."

The purpose of this intervention was to decrease the consumption of soda, and they achieved to get three out of ten people to stop taking soda and a second phase destined to make exercise in which six out of ten people began exercising, resulting in an improvement of their levels of glucose in a two to four-month period.

Among the 27 therapeutic educators that graduated in this generation, we found professionals of Medicine, Nutrition, Nursing, Social Work and Pharma-biological Chemistry.

It is important to mention that, the graduated of the diploma have come from 41 cities of Guanajuato and other states such as Jalisco, Michoacán and Querétaro, a total of 386 health professionals from the all the editions since 2010.
