buscan-desde-la-academia-estrategias-fortalecer-integracion-migrantes-retorno-ug-ugtoGuanajuato, Gto., December 28, 2017.- Professors of the University of Guanajuato (UG) work in collaboration with researchers of the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas and the Texas University in San Antonio, to study how the returning migrants who enter the degree in Teaching the English language, develop.

The Coordinator of the Master in Applied Linguistics to Teaching English of UG, Dr. Irasema Mora Pablo, explained that she began to work five years ago in the state of Guanajuato with returning migrants, meaning, people who spent large part of their life abroad and came back to Mexico.

Her concern to understand the behavior, changes that face and the possible support that can provided to people with this profile, increased her interest in the topic, so she began researching –together with the work team of the Academic Body of Applied Linguistics to Teaching English—by watching the students of the degree of Teaching the English Language at UG.

Now, they are part of the themed network supported by the Program for the Teacher's Professional Development (PRODEP), in collaboration with the Universidad Autónoma de Tamaulipas and the Texas University in San Antonio, where they also observe the changes in the students who are returning migrants.

Dr. Mora coordinates this project at UG, and together with her partners of the academic body, she has observed the dynamic in which the degree creates two groups, one of the people who have always lived in Mexico and another who are the returning migrants; so, the professors have tried to create a synergy between these two.

She explained that people return to Mexico for several reasons, such as deportation, family reasons, because they migratory doesn't allow them to enter college, or because many times the option to continue studying is to return to Mexico.

She mentions, according her research, the people who have lived a certain number of years in USA, when they return to Mexico, it is difficult to integrate in the scholar or social aspect, because of the attachment they develop to the American culture.

Dr. Mora has also observed the trajectory of the returning migrants regarding learning languages, since many come with a high level of English, but the Spanish level is low, or their oral English level is high, but low in writing, and this depends on the situation they developed in USA.

Likewise, she said she is exploring the second research stage, to find the way to generate more identity with the Mexican culture. Besides, as part of the same educational program, they teach seminars, and they invite specialists to collaborate with students and these invite them to participate in research projects, all this opens new horizons and opportunities, so they go where they see fit.

Within the educational program, they seek other platforms to help, among these are, aid from PRODEP and the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACyT) to grant them a research scholarship, some of them have already published their work in international indexed magazines, and some have had the opportunity to present their work in national and international conferences.

The scholar added that she has made internships in the Texas University and in Tamaulipas, all this to somehow involve the returning migrants in the project, and the students can question about what they have done and what their partners in the same situation have made. Plus, some of them continue with their formation with a master degree.

It is important to mention that, this kind of research is developed continuously in the Department of Languages at UG, and they seek to eliminate the stereotype of the English professor, it is thought that any person who dominates the language can teach, but no; they must prepare, train and have college formation in there are to provide an adequate attention to the students, cleared the professor.

She added that both the professor and the are must receive merit, because the master in Applied Linguistics to Teaching English of UG, Campus Guanajuato is in the National Census of Quality Programs (PNPC) and the graduates are well placed as consultants in the country, English professors in public and private universities, plus being coordinators of the English area in their respective institutions.
