León, Gto., December 18, 2017.- With an investment of $2 million pesos, the Campus León of the University of Guanajuato (UG) acquired last generation equipment and unique in its national level, which will allow the students of the degree in Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation to make diagnosis and design intervention instruments to improve the quality of life of disabled people, and even, make measurements that allow to diminish the risk of injuries in elders, as well as elaborating research projects for the prevention of health.

Modern and with last generation technology, the Laboratory of High Human Performance, is provided with two high speed cameras, two infrared cameras, a treadmill with a platform with 15,000 sensors that, when working with the electromyography software, it allows to identify, graphicly, the feet pressure points.

Also, they can make different measurements of the variants of the walking such as speed, how many steps per minute the patient gives, which extremity is making more pressure, besides knowing which muscle is working efficient or inefficiently.

The students can help from two monitors where they can visualize the walking pattern with an avatar that shows the human anatomy from different angles and how the muscles work in real time; the seven movement sensors and the eight channels of electromyography are synced to measure the angles of the articulations of the hip, ankle and knee with which they can make a full diagnosis.

In an interview, Dr. Beatriz Verónica González Sandoval, Coordinator of the degree in Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation of UG, mentioned that the apparatus offers other possibilities since it has been used to provide attention to 18 people that have different complications: from posture problems to patients with lumbago and sciatica.

"This tool can be used with an interdisciplinary work to obtain better results with the patient; students of the Biomedical Engineering and Medical Surgeon degree are interested in the functioning and applications of the apparatus.

It is important to mention that, a plantar pressure analysis protocol has begun in patients with a diabetic neuropathy, with it, they will know how the patient is stepping and see if the pattern can be modified to reduce injuries and improve the walking and the quality of life.

The Laboratory of High Human Performance, being the only one installed in the country has drew the attention of representatives of public and private institutions both from the state and other entities like Puebla and Jalisco.

Representatives of the "Instituto Guanajuatense para las Personas con Discapacidad (INGUDIS", "Sistema Municipal para el Desarrollo Integral de la Familia de León (DIF), "Asociación Leonesa para la Distrofía Muscular (ALDIM)", among others, have made several visits to the Physical Therapy Laboratory located in the venue San Carlos.

Dr. Beatriz Verónica González Sandoval and Juan Manuel Meléndez Olivares oversee providing support in the use of the instrument to the students in the sixth and seventh semester of the degree in Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation.

This way, the University of Guanajuato becomes a referent in educational quality with vanguard technology and relevant educational programs.
