
Guanajuato, Gto., February 28, 2018.- The state of Puebla through the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP), hosts the XXVII National Chemistry Olympiad, organized by the Mexican Academy of Sciences (AMC) in which five students from the high school college of the University of Guanajuato will participate.
The Guanajuato delegation is comprised of Esteban Swift Muñoz, Eduardo López Lozano and Eduardo Alejandro Guzmán Cuevas, three students of HS Centro Histórico León; Uriel Maldonado Hernández and Ángel Tadeo Rodríguez Mares, from HS León, and José Gabriel Portillo Ramírez, student of the CETiS system. This edition involves 188 high school students from all over the country.
The competition consists of three examinations (theoretical, practical and international), which include four areas: analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physicochemical and organic chemistry. The tests are applied in two levels: level "A", focused on students of the last year of high school who have a good level of knowledge in general and organic chemistry, while the "B" level is for those who have knowledge of general chemistry and who have not participated in previous Olympics.
The top 15 students will integrate the delegations representing Mexico in international competitions in the coming months; The winning team will have the opportunity to attend the 50 International Chemistry Olympiad to be held in the Czech Republic in July, as well as in the XXIII Ibero-American Chemistry Olympiad, with a date to be celebrated in El Salvador.
The Guanajuato delegation is accompanied by M. Víctor Manuel Mejía Cobos, professor of the UG and state delegate of the Olympiad together with Dr. Jesús Raúl Lugo Martínez, also delegate and academic secretary of the High School College, in addition to the M. Miguel Ángel Ruiz Torres, as an advisor professor of the HS Centro Histórico León.
It should be noted that the delegation of Guanajuato each year has been able to obtain medals from the beginning of these competitions; In the last edition, four medals were obtained, and these students have been trained since November through the delegates and professors of the Division of Natural and Exact sciences of the Guanajuato campus.
