se-preparan-alumnos-ug-para-campeonato-nacional-debate-ugtoGuanajuato, Gto., March 3, 2018.- Laura Elizabeth Vázquez Villanueva, a student at the sixth semester of the degree in Political Science of the Division of Law, Politics and Government (DDPG) of UG's Campus Guanajuato, won the championship of the Speeches Tournament of the "Debate league of el Bajío" which was held from Febraury 18 to 18 at this university.

Her teammate is Eduardo Toledo Espinoza, a student of the fourth semester of the Law degree who, next to Vázquez Villanueva, are now preparing for the following national and international stages to raise the name of the University of Guanajuato.

In an interview, Laura revealed that she was also one of the top 10 best debaters of the competition, against 96 debaters who had five rounds through the last day of the competition, in which at least 16 universities and educative institutions from the region participated.

She explained that in the first stage the speech is prepared and expressed, from the six halls only the top three advances; in the second stage they get a phrase to develop as soon as they get it and they only have a minute to prepare.

At the end, only five contenders moved on, she said, who built and defended their argument. In their case, they had to speak as if she were a dreamer about to meat with Donald Trump and had to ask him not to dissolve the DACA program (a migratory program which protects from deportation the children of the migrants in US).

She revealed, that because of her personality, she always relies on feelings, but knowing that Trump cares next to zilch about that, she addressed it strong, saying "let's talk about business" and how dreamers would help "make America great again", as is the idea of the North American ruler.

Finally, she mentioned as a fact, all UG participants were in the finals, however, they were in the same hall, so they had to eliminate each other.

Eduardo Toledo mentioned he is ready to continue participating in these debate activities that use the "parliamentary British system", which consists in two chambers: government and opposition, who debate a motion (a topic) in a logic manner and with an argument strategy.

Within the chambers there are two more, he said, so there's four teams by twos at the end, which makes them eight people debating and each one with a specific role.

They did well in the first rounds, they summed points, he recalled, and it is the firs time UG's team reaches the final; given the system is barely known in Mexico and only private universities developed it, but trying to adopt this system, they'll improve their argumentative skills.

It is a tool that can be used in any area, he said, and they have obtained excellent results as a team, so they are preparing for the national competitions, and finally, to the international competition which will be held in Valparaíso, Chile; where they expect to raise the name of the University of Guanajuato.

It is important to remember that the University of Guanajuato organized the Debate League, in which nearly 140 people participated from at least 16 universities among them; Tecnológico de Monterrey Campus Monterrey, Campus Ciudad de México, Campus Santa Fe, Campus Toluca, Universidad de Guadalajara, ITAM, Ibero León, Universidad de Puebla & Autónoma de Zacatecas.

José Antonio Rivera Canchola participated as an organizer; he is a student at the eighth semester of the Law degree at DDPG of Campus Guanajuato, who is also the General Coordinator of the Debate Team and is part of the organizing team of the national championship which will be held in July this year.
