Guanajuato, Gto., March 7, 2018.- Chemistry is a science that makes them discover new ways of seeing the world, its materials and its function, as mentioned by the three students of the HS Centro Histórico León of the University of Guanajuato, who became silver medalists at the XXVII National Chemistry Olympiad.
At the Olympics, organized by the Mexican Academy of Sciences (AMC), 188 high school students from all over the republic participated. The medalists of the University of Guanajuato moved to the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP) to carry out three examinations: theoretical, practical and international, which include the areas of analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, physicochemical and organic chemistry.
Esteban Veloz Muñoz, in addition to winning the silver medal, was also selected to participate in the trainings that will take him to the Ibero-American Olympiad in El Salvador and the International Olympics that will take place in the Czech Republic.
"At the National Olympics there is a day when we take a test to choose the selection that will represent Mexico in international competitions. It's a very long and complex exam. From the results they choose 15 students and I was elected. The next step is to take advice at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México and continue the tests until a team of 4 participants and two substitutes travel to represent the country, said Esteban.
The student of the HS Centro Histórico León mentioned that when he saw the movies and cartoons as a child in which scientists appeared in labs doing amazing things; he became interested in chemistry and then in high school he realized his passion for science.
Both Eduardo López Lozano and Eduardo Alejandro Guzmán Cuevas, silver medalists also expressed that the process to participate in the National Olympics was extensive and very gratifying, "there is pressure and stress, but also very good times as having won the medals. "
The students explained that to go to the Olympics, in principle, all interested students are convened by Professor Miguel Ángel Ruiz. Then some filters are made until there are ten that go to the state and regional competition, hence select six students competing nationwide.
The three college winners agreed that constancy and dedication are key tools to achieve what they propose, so they invited all students to do what they like with these features.
Professor Miguel Ángel Ruiz, professor and advisor to the award-winning team mentioned that "it is exciting to see the triumph of my three students because there you see that the role of a teacher is being transcendent." He acknowledged the personal effort of each one and thanked the Principal of HS Centro Histórico León, Ma. Eugenia Ibarra Rodríguez, "she has given us all the facilities and without her support this would not have been possible."
Another student who represents a pride for the University of Guanajuato is Ángel Tadeo Rodríguez Mares of HS León, who obtained bronze medal in the national competition.
In this regard, Ángel Tadeo enunciated have felt much joy in obtaining the medal because it is the reflection of his work, "a year ago I tried and was very close, but on that occasion I could achieve the bronze, not only represented the University of Guanajuato but the whole state, which fills me with pride. "
