ug-colabora-en-proyecto-para-controlar-lirio-acuatico-en-laguna-de-yuriria-ugtoYuriria, Gto., April 4, 2018.- The University of Guanajuato (UG) contributes to control the water lily in the lagoon of Yuriria, through a project that involves a sum of efforts from the government, society and educational institutions.

During a meeting where they showed the progress in controlling the plague, UG's President, Dr. Luis Felipe Guerrero Agripino highlighted that the university has the permanent commitment to liaise with the problems that the environment demands.

He mentioned that the project is an opportunity to join efforts from the authorities, teachers, students, government and society towards a transcendent topic for the life of Guanajuato.

"This is a test on how we should work in the country: together, government, society and educational institutions. Like this we build a better society, a better citizenship and a better environment", he sustained.

The General Director of the Institute of Ecology for the State of Guanajuato, Dr. Juan Ángel Mejía Gómez, revealed that the comprehensive project implies the manual, mechanic, biological and chemical control, and UG's participation allows to know important breakthroughs.

Like so, he revealed that in the evaluations made on early 2018, they detected an approximate infestation of 1,600 hectares, and approximately a couple of weeks ago, the number decreased to 950. From those, 550 hectares are intervened, and they expect the results in a couple of months.

The State Governor, Lic. Miguel Márquez Márquez celebrated the project and the important collaboration of different sectors of society. Plus, during the meeting, they agreed on summing efforts with the federal government to rehabilitate the water treatment plants, which will reinforce the plague control in the lagoon.

On the matter, the Delegate of the National Commission of Water (Conagua), Lic. Humberto Carlo Navarro de Alva, reminded that the lagoon of Yuriria is one of the most important wetlands internationally and confirmed the contribution of resources for the treatment plants.

Representing who receive the benefits, spoke Rafael Herrera, who reminded that the association "Todos Somos Yuriria", was created by an initiative of a group of migrants, and affirmed that collaborating in the control of the water lily "has been a wonderful experience", which has involved men, women and children.

The lagoon of Yuriria is an international importance wetland because it is a habitat of several species of migrating birds. In the comprehensive control of the water lily have participated approximately 500 volunteers, led by Yuriria's parish priest; the civil associations "Todos Somos Yuriria" and "Caminando por una Esperanza", as well as teachers and students of the High School Lázaro Cárdenas; the federal, state and municipal governments and the University of Guanajuato.
