juan-russo-libro-democracia-universidad-guanajuato-ug-ugtoLeón, Gto., May 24, 2018.- With the intention to talk about the topic of democracy and analyze the multiple factors that come from it, the book "Democracia y Ciudadanías en América Latina" (Democracy and Citizenships in Latin America) was presented.

Essays to honor Francsico Delich, an edition made by Dr. Juan Russo Foresto, a professor-researcher at the Division of Social Sciences and Humanities of the University of Guanajuato (UG) Campus León.

The book was the result of a colloquium done in 2017 in relationship with the life and work of Francisco Delich, an Argentinian lawyer and politician and rector of the University of Buenos Aires.

During the colloquium held at the Division of Social Sciences of the same campus, it was visible the wide range of topics, problems and alternatives of solutions that the countries build.

In the words of the very own Dr. Russo, democracy "is a worn word, first a great hope, one of the greatest dreams in the XX century, at the same time, one of the greatest deceptions".

Another concept that was addressed was citizenship, considered as the subject of the democracy and carrier of the rights, it has even been conceived as a dream from the XVIII century towards the equality of the state and the community.

Dr. Russo began his reflection regarding the beginning of democracy in Latin America, where they thought any democracy was good, facing the authoritarianism in Chile, Argentina and Uruguay.

In the case if Mexico, he shared that at the same time the political democracy has advances, "the civil rights, the political rights have decayed", where he exemplified the citizens candidates who have been murdered in the 2018 electoral process.

At the editorial presentation, they had the presence of Dr. Alex Ricardo Caldera Ortega, Director of the Division of Social Sciences and Humanities, who in his participation highlighted the academic and research activity the division has, as well as the multidisciplinary way to work it has.

He mentioned that the democracy is an unreached problem in the region, with several deficiencies and things to do.

Added to what Dr. Caldera said, he mentioned that with work like these they pretend to widen the topics of social sciences and respond to the type of citizenship it is being built.

Later, four of the eighteen authors of the chapter used the voice, first to talk was Dr. Daniel Tagle Zamora, who addressed topics such as environment and democracy, natural resources in Mexico, merchandising water, as well as the negotiation and distribution of this natural resource.

Then, Dr. Erika Carcaño Valencia, spoke about the chapter referred to democracy and environment, specially of the case of a story in the North Sierra of Puebla and the extractive megaprojects. She emphasized that the chapter in mention she tried to reveal the answer of the communities in defense of their territory.

The turn now was for Dr. Alejandro Klein who spoke about his chapter, where he presents an x-ray of the demographic mutation occurred in Mexico during the XX century, where they show the problems of social citizenship in the senior age, and spoke the new social roles branded in all the world's demography.

Finally, Dr. Vania Marín, a professor-researcher of the University Pedro de Valdivia –Chile—and who is making a postdoctoral stay in the Department of Philosophy of UG's Campus Guanajuato, mentioned that in her chapter, she reflected the condition of women in Chile in the XXI century and some examples that the state is absent in policies and laws for the rights of gender.

The book was hosted by the National Council of Science and Technology (Conacyt), Associazione per la Ricerca Euro Latino Americana –Italy- (ARELA, for its acronym in Italian) and the Facultad Latinoamericana de Ciencias Sociales (FLACSO) venue Argentina.

The book has 16 chapters written by authors such as Azul Aguiar, Aleida Azamar Alonso, Eduardo Luis Espinosa, Edilberto Gallardo Valente, Luis Gómez Calcaño, Vania Marín, Olivia Leyva Muñoz, James Giulio Manfredo D´Angelo, María Matilde Ollier, Iria Puyosa, Carlos Manuel Rodríguez Arechavaleta, Federico Sandoval Hernández & Andrea Spreafico, among others.

The UG scholars who participated in the are: Erika Carcaño Valencia, Armando Chaguaceda, Teodora Hurtado Saa, Alejandro Klein, Daniel Tagle Zamora and of course, Dr. Russo.
