Guanajuato, Gto., September 4, 2018. The General University Council unanimously approved to grant the highest distinction granted by the House of Studies to Dr. Octavio José Obregón Díaz, for his outstanding contributions in the field of physics; to M. Jesús Gallardo Carrillo, in the field of plastic arts and the post-mortem distinction to M. Héctor Quintanar Prieto, by virtue of his outstanding artistic trajectory.

dr-octavio-obregon-diazDr. Octavio Obregón is professor of the Department of Physics, at the Campus León of the University of Guanajuato (UG), researcher emeritus of the National Researchers System (SNI); and he is internationally recognized for his contributions on topics such as gravitation, relativistic astrophysics, supergravitation, field theory and string theory.

His theories have attracted the attention of important scientists in the world. Dr. Octavio Obregón was the only physicist in Latin America who Stephen Hawking published with, one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists of our time and perhaps the most recognized cosmologist.

Jesús Gallardo has a trajectory of 30 years at the service of the University of Guanajuato, he was founder and first Director of the then School of Plastic Arts, now Department of Visual Arts, where for 16 years the University contest is held " Jesús Gallardo, "as a tribute to the beloved and respected teacher, example of dedication and talent.

mtro-hector-quintanar-prietoThe General University Council also endorsed the delivery of the doctorate honoris causa post-mortem to the M. Héctor Quintanar Prieto (1936-2013), one of the most outstanding characters in the arts of the second half of the twentieth century in Latin America, as an artist, creator, teacher, organizer and promoter of the culture, in particular, of the Mexican music of concert.

He was head of the Symphonic Orchestra of the University of Guanajuato from 1992 to 1996; position from which he achieved the merger of the Bajío Philharmonic with the OSUG leading to unprecedented growth to the most representative musical group of the state. In addition, he was part of the academic staff of the University for almost 16 years, facet in which he always showed a high commitment for the quality of his work and impulse of the production of pieces through his students of composition.

Therefore, the highest collegiate organ of government of the University of Guanajuato approved the delivery of this honorable distinction, which recognizes the contributions of three illustrious scholars.
