Guanajuato, Gto., September 11, 2018.- M. Juan José Martínez Reyes, academician of the University of Guanajuato (UG), was awarded the "Impulse for Environmental Culture" award in the school category, for his work to promote a culture of conservation of the environment and species.

The award given by the Institute of Ecology of the state of Guanajuato seeks to promote the strengthening of environmental education through social participation, to develop in society a solid environmental culture oriented to assess and act with a Sense of respect for natural resources.

M. Juan José Martínez Reyes, professor in the Department of Mines, Metallurgy and Geology, has developed several projects focused on reducing problems such as deforestation, the loss and degradation of ecosystems, the excess of waste in natural areas and water bodies. In addition, he promotes a culture of flora and fauna protection between the university community and society, as well as water, soil and air.

One of these projects is the San Matías nursery, where they select and generate suitable conditions for the plants to grow. The activities are carried out by students in the modality of college social and professional service of the seven educational programs of the Division of Engineering of UG's Campus Guanajuato; It has financial support from several mining companies and is coordinated by the M. Juan José Martínez Reyes.

In addition, the academic of UG promotes the realization of cleaning campaigns in which are collected materials such as PET, cardboard, glass, tires, paper, etc., which are later classified and taken to the collection centers. These activities have been carried out in the Cerro La Bufa, El Orito, the Sierra of Guanajuato, adjacent roads to the Department of Mines in the city of Guanajuato and the river of Cata, for approximately 4 years.

Always with the support of the student community, the M. Martínez Reyes also promotes reforestation campaigns in which the specimens of the San Matías nursery are used. In addition, it develops an important work to divulge the environmental culture through environmental fairs, congresses and environmental education workshops.

It emphasizes the collaboration of the university through the Department of Environmental Management and Sustainability of the Unit of University Responsibility, since the jury of this prize was integrated by outstanding professors in environmental projects, from the different campuses of the University of Guanajuato.
