León, Gto., September 25, 2018.- Given the considerable increase in the population of older adults and to promote the physical and mental state of this sector, the University of Guanajuato (UG) Campus León through its medical specialty program of Geriatrics, aims to cover the need to have health professionals that combine in the specialization the scientific, technical and humanist capability.
It is important to mention that the National Health System reports that the epidemiological transition is closely associated with the ageing of the population and the development of risks in relation to unhealthy habits such as inadequate nutrition, low physical activity, stress and genetic contribution; However, age plays a vital role as the health problems of adults and older adults will therefore be the component that most attention demands.
In such a way that to contribute in this field the UG created the specialty of geriatrics in the year 2011 with headquarters in the Regional Hospital of the Institute of Security and Social Services of the Workers of the State (ISSSTE) in León, which is accredited to the National Census of Quality Postgraduate (PNPC), a reason that guarantees the academic quality of graduate studies.
The professor of the program is Dr. Jorge Luis Torres Gutiérrez, president of the National College of Geriatric Medicine, who considers the geriatrics as a young and pertinent specialty, in turn highlighted the importance of the last edition of the VII International Congress of Geriatric Medicine based in the city of León and whose objective was to update the physicians and specialists in geriatrics, as well as introduce in the teaching of this branch of medicine to personnel from other areas of health, through lectures masterclasses, symposia, workshops and research work.
Fifty-seven professors, five of foreign origin, one from France, another from the United States, one from Colombia and two from Costa Rica attended the Congress.
The rest of the invited professors came from the Instituto Nacional de Geriatría, Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición "Salvador Zubirán", del Hospital San José del Tecnológico de Monterrey, Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León, Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Universidad de Colima, Universidad de Guadalajara, from the Secretaría de Salud del Estado, from the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS), Instituto de Seguridad y Servicios Sociales de los Trabajadores del Estado (ISSSTE), Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX), Grupo Ángeles, As well as of the same UG. The next Congress is expected to take place in the city of Mérida, Yucatán, in August in 2019.
Now the specialty of Geriatrician de la UG has four resident physicians who, to enter this specialization, they had to pre-study at least three years of internal medicine. The geriatric specialty takes place in two years.
