León, Gto., October 24, 2018. The University of Guanajuato (UG) Campus León, is home to the third Ibero-American Symposium the AGEs and Health reason why it brings together specialists from multiple countries such as Brazil, Spain, Chile, the United States, Argentina and Uruguay to tackle in depth what is related to the Advanced glycation end products (AGEs).
"AGEs are a heterogeneous group of molecules generated by non-enzymatic reactions of glycation and oxidation of proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. The increased formation of AGEs occurs in conditions such as diabetes mellitus and aging.
During the opening ceremony, Dr. Carlos Hidalgo Valadez, Rector of the León Campus of the University of Guanajuato, urged the reflection of the attendees. He said that the health professionals who meet in this event are the main agents that will have to solve the problems of the pathologies where the AGEs are present, since often the legislation is not enough to attend, nor to understand the current public health problems.
The first conference was by Dr. María Eugenia Garay Sevilla, professor-researcher of the Department of Medical Sciences of the UG, in which he addressed the topic of the AGEs and the cardiovascular disease analyzing key concepts to give an introduction of the topics that will be developed during the academic days prepared from October 24th to 26th at the Campus León Forum venue.
She noted that cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide, hence the importance of hastily addressing this international public health problem.
She also said that AGEs are compounds that originate from a spontaneous reaction. She said that since adolescence and even childhood, this type of pathologies should be prevented, since it is at this age where risk factors begin.
Next, the conference "El eje AGE/RAGE en el síndrome metabólico temprano" by Dr. Armando Gómez Ojeda, professor of the same department. He said that it is necessary to have a healthy lifestyle since childhood because some studies say that there is a direct relationship with diabetes and the formation of AGEs, which can be prevented at an early age.
Therefore, Dr. Armando Gómez made a historical analysis of the various studies that have addressed the theme of AGES to conclude that it is not a contemporary theme and that the metabolic syndrome is currently a global pandemic.
During the inaugural event, in addition to the Rector of the León Campus, they were present; Dr. José Jaramillo, Medical Coordinator representing the Department of Health of the State of Guanajuato; Dr. Mauro Napsuciale Mendívil, Director of support for research and postgraduate in UG; María del Pilar Fernández Carrasco, representing the Division of Health Sciences; Dr. Maciste Habacuc Macías Cervantes, Director of the Department of Medical Sciences; Dr. María Eugenia Garay Sevilla, Director of the National and International Organizing Committee and Dr. Jaime Uribarri, Co-Director of the International Organizing Committee.
