Guanajuato, Gto., November 22, 2018.- In the Latin American Conference about School Dropout (VIII-CLABES), Lic. Elena Angelina Guerrero Franco and Lic. Militza García Herrera, ascribed to the School Administration Direction of the University of Guanajuato (UG), exposed two innovative projects that are being carried out in the university.

The event took place in Panama and gathered directors, academic and administrative personnel and students with the purpose to analyze the causes for school dropout, the quality of teaching, and the strategies that allow to raise the educational level especially in Latin American countries.

About her participation in this conference, the Coordinator of Admittance and Graduation, Lic. Elena Angelina Guerrero Franco mentioned that one of UG's programs that were exposed was the regulated pass, a strategy to link high school and college.

She explained that to participate, the students should've been enrolled since the first semester in any of UG's high schools, have a GPA of 9.0 and one flunked subject at the most. Whoever meets these requirements are invited –if they're on the fifth semester—to participate in the process, the admission fee is covered and if admitted, they enter the educational program of their choosing directly.

This scheme has been applied for three cycles: in the first, 118 students were admitted, 170 students in the second and 257 students in the last. The importance of this regulated pass reflects on the inclusion of the new university regulation, mentioned Lic. Guerrero Franco, who mentioned that in the country there is only another public institution –the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México—that uses a similar model.

About the Consult System of the Enrollment Profile of the students in the UG, Lic. Militza García Herrera explained that it is a project that has been running since 2015. The system allows the institution to know the students it receives, their characteristics, study and health habits, vocational orientation, social-economic profile, among others.

This is important, she cleared, because it allows the directors of the division and coordinators of the educational programs to make decisions based on that information and create strategies focused on avoiding school dropout.

In their opinion, participating in events such as the one in Panama allows to compare the programs at UG and other educational institutions of Latin America. They believe, this project provides useful information for the directors at the university and benefit the student community.
